Cert for turbo

Post by RMS » Tue May 31, 2011 5:03 pm

I am just finishing off a project to turbocharge my '89 eunos roadster.

Can anyone recommend a good certifier in the auckland area? I know there is a list on the lvvta web page but I would appreciate recommendations.

It will also need to be certed for coil over suspension that I have added.

Having read the technical documents on the lvvta webpage I think that the car is well prepared for the cert with the exception of a driveshaft hoop. Can anyone tell me if the PPF is likely to cause problems with fitting a hoop?

Also, on the topic of certs, it's interesting to note that a change of turbo or even wastegate requires a cert... I reckon there's a lot of cars out there with upgraded turbo systems and no cert though.

If you are on the shore, I can recommend Neil Fraser at Fraser Cars, he is in the Birkenhead area

i just used a length of 50X5mm strap and bolt it arround the drive shaft to the top and bottom of the PPF about 100mm from the front universal

as for cert
i used john brett he is good and will come to you if you can source a hoist

Thanks,

sprsta: Do you mean you bent a piece of 50x5mm bar into a U shape and bolted that to the PPF or am I misunderstanding you?

That certainly sounds like an easy way to do it.

Thanks, I was understanding you correctly then.

actually looks a lot simpler than the hoops that bolt to the chassis.

Did you have to remove the PPF to drill the holes?

Got it sorted, I had mine go around the outside of the PPF but it's basically the same :)

Was a real pain drilling the top of the PPF though, luckily the previous owner of my shed was a mechanic and there's a ramp outside that provides access to the underside of the car and also had to take the drive shaft out.

SLYDIT: Reading the pdf's on lvvta.org.nz it seems to have been required since at least Sept 2002.

I had to have one when I got the TG certed. I just used a length of stainless wire rope across the tunnel.

<500km and my cheap trademe manifold has cracked, didn't think I'd have to build my steam pipe manifold _quite_ this soon.

well, it was the manifold impulse buy that got me started down this track so I can't feel too bad about it :)

Still, thought it might give me a month or two at least, I built a bracket to support the weight of the turbo too.

Built a new steampipe manifold over the weekend using autobend flanges... she's not pretty but it got me home :)

The 'ebay' manifold doesn't just have a crack in it, it's actually had a piece fall right out. hate to think that that would have done if it went through the turbine.

been driving the car for the last few days and all seems good. Had to remove the gasket between the manifold and turbo as it disintegrated but otherwise all good.

Weather permitting I'll be at Pukekohe on the 16th to see how she handles some real heat.

On the subject of certifiers, how much does it usually cost to certify say, new coilover suspension and what is usually involved?

Usually about $400 give or take. If you are on the Shore, have a talk to Neil Fraser. His contact details are on the LVVTA website.

He will normally give the car an inspection and test drive and let you know if you need to do anything.

If you can, it is usually best to get several mods certed at the same time, otherwise it can get expensive.

i used John Brett ( 0800LOWVOL) he costs about $500 inc GST and is mobile so if you find him a hoist he can do it
it is best to do as much modification as you can to get certified at once
as it doesnt matter if you are only certing one or 50 things

be aware that you need to have your car set up at the height you want the car to stay in...
they measure the ride height at certification time and you can only deviate from that by 5%...
so put in your coilovers get them all settled in and get a weel alignment THEN get the cert done...

OH and you cannot get a new wof until you have the actual steel plate attatched to the car.I got caught out as my wof ran out AFTER it had its cert done....so i had to wait for the pen pushers to process my cert and send the plate...not fun.
