Steam Pipe

Post by RMS » Tue Apr 05, 2011 12:37 pm

I've been looking for a source of 'Steam Pipe' and had a lot of trouble because when I ask people if they have 'Steam Pipe' or 'Weld El's' they have no idea what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I found some and it was called 'black pipe'.

Hope this info is useful to someone.

Also, found this at www.hoseshop.co.nz and they have a lot of the things I need for my turbo, silicone elbows, hose, all kinds of fittings, the aforementioned black pipe, worth a look if you are after something along these lines.

Yea, Steam pipe is just what some people refer the pipe as, usually they are just refering to schedule 40 steel pipe

yeah you can also get it at steel and tube (piping in panmure)
just ask for schedule 40, they even have samples sitting on the counter

$80 of bends was more than enough to do my manifold

I used the hose shop also for turbo/intercooler bits as well as Scarles for bits that the hose shop didn't have and they are only a 100m down the road on the same side before the northen on-ramp. :D

What were the prices like on the silicone WOT? I didn't ask but I was curious since I just bought a pile off trademe.

I liked that the bends all had long legs on them, mine are really short

Scarles were $30-ish dollars for blue unbranded silicon & aluminium bends, the straights about $20-ish......where-as the Hose shop for heavier duty blue silicon or black rubber were around $45 for bends and the straights from memory could be cut to length.

Ulrich aluminium had bends in ali that matched my turbo & intercooler diam [45mm i think] & their prices were just under $40 each.

Thats going back nearly a year mind you!

All i remember now is that i used about 5 different suppliers & two were inernet sourced.

i imported all my silicon couplers from the states...they were less than half the price of ones in NZ and they came in black, not ugly blue.

schedule 40 weld els are cheap, ( i got mine from anzors at the mount at about $7 each) and you should be using AT LEAST 12mm plate steel for your manifold plates. the plates WILL warp when welded so you need some meet on them when you have them shaved totally flat.
also i used the copper oval nuts on my turbo fittings and they are still tight. drill your manifold mounting holes at least 2mm bigger than the studs to allow for expansion or your studs will snap.
