Got my WOF this morning & no need to get a cert for my Turbo :D

The down side is noticeable slippage from the clutch so now i need to lookout for a set-up that will handle up to 10psi boost just to be on the safe side.

I would imagine the 1800 clutch might not be enough?

It needs to be mainly for road use and occaisional track days.

get a 1800 fly wheel and have it lightened to about the 1600 weight then use a HD clutch on that itll hold no problems

If you dont mind spending a bit of money you could always get a clutch kit from somewhere
I know Flyin miata in the states do a kit for Usa$600 which includes Level 1 clutch rated for 318 lb/ft of torque, a lightweight flywheel, clutch switch override, pilot and release bearings or the slightly bigger kit which is Usa$50 more

Check it out

The 1800 clutch (mine, with 100k on it) held 10psi/180hp mostly ok ... only some slight slippage on colder nights at 4-5000rpm.

In hindsight it'd have been better and cheaper to stick with it and a slightly higher pressure plate. The ACT that replaced it pretty expensive and felt like it had close to zero freeplay in it for the first month or so !!! :P

You could also talk to the guys at Exedy (Wairau Rd, North Shore). They do a few options for the MX5 and the price isn't too bad.

Be careful though. The HD Exedy stuff that comes out of Australia is not worth having. The Jap clutches are good though.

Hi G, Great to see you are on the road after all your hard work.

Although my 5 only gets out for a few hundred k's in between WOF as I wait for some time to finish my basic tune the clutch has never slipped and it runs a constant 15psi, the fly wheel came from Jif via Poison thanks!, I can't remember if the clutch came with it or if a new clutch/pressure plate was bought.

Prior to getting this clutch I was told a Mazda 323 1600 Turbo set up could be fitted??? might be worth a few phone calls, I may have a 323 fly wheel in the garage some where. cheers

i'm running a heavy duty 1800 clutch in mine. it is an "xtreme" clutch from aus. seems ok but maybe if you want to be 100% sure get the clutch from FM i think thats called an extreme too but its bullet proof. most HD clutches are a hit and miss affair that FM clutch is gauranteed.

Did it come out with the old clutch or was it in the box with the new one?

Would you believe it Bnt have no xtreme sprung button clutches in the country after telling me it would be here this morning & offered me a pink Exedy equivalent!

Could be over a week to get an extreme one from Aus.

Waiting to see what they come up with otherwise i will have to invent plan "B".

an exedy sports tuff will hold
or get autoclutch to build one for you did your flywheel come with a clutch attached so they can rebuild that with extra clamp pressure

Got in my new HD Clutch kit, machined flywheel, new spigot & release bearing all after a bit of grunting & cursing.
I thought it might be all wrong as i couldn't mate the gearbox to the engine & had three goes at it. [must invest in a hoist, damm this laying under cars}.
I measured the clutch kit for depth & diam. that all seemed fine,re-aligned the clutch plate for centre untill finally on my last attempt it went on a breeze!! :D
This is the first time i have used a centering tool & i am thinking that even with that all the new bits need more accuracy even when using the tool.

Took it for a test drive & all seems great apart from almost no travel before uptake but i am happy with that as it means quicker gear change.

Looks like i will make it to Driver traing at Taupo this weekend so see you there if anybody is going [shame about the weather as it might be wet.Na!!]
