Everything was modified/fabricated by me except for some machining, fabrication of the firewall and engine bay painting :)

The tyres are standard size- I insist on this for 2 reasons:
1- The car looks totally standard, even MX5 car club members and Mazda dealers cannot pick it as having been modified (except for the massive front brakes :( ) until the engine is started; this is very important to me- the ultimate "Q" car concept

2- The limited traction of the rear tyres is what saves the diff and half shafts from destroying themselves.

I've tried many different tyres on the car and thouroughly recommend continental conti-sport contact 3's.
They will often take full throttle in second and almost always in third without breaking traction. Of course you need to roll the throttle on rather than snap it open, and the tyres need to be warmed up first...
Second runs to 102km/h, so 0-100 km/h time seems to be about 3.5 secs without a need to change gear.

Achillies 123s were remarkable, they easily cope with the torque and are very cheap- unfortunately being lower profile they reduced my ground clearance too much.

Having a lightweight car with all that torque at really low rpm (400Nm at 1000 rpm  ) means that the car is incredibly easy to drive, even in town, any gear will do- Really!

The electronic throttle of the LS3 really shines here- it's so progressive and smoothly linear that the car is easy to drive without wheelspin or jerking. it really controls the torque output very smoothly. As you say, tubo cars can be a real PITA in town...

The engine was brand new crate motor from Ebbetts here in Hamilton.
I imported a new gearbox from Holden Australia, the Cobra and Mustang parts to modify it came from the States.
The Engine Management system and Brakes are from the States, but both required a fair bit of modification to fit MX5.

I've put the car in "the garage" part of this site, but don't know if you can see it yet...

Yep, has had a look at the car in the garage section, but didn't have the mods listed there, hence the million and one questions.

From what I have read there are about 20 different models of the T56 Gearbox (Cobra, Viper, Commodore, Caddi, Mustang, Aston Martin, Camaro) so I need to find out what model they were using in the Boss Frog kit.

From what I could see the Holden one was the heaviest and handled the least amount of power, so was going to try and stay away from that one. The Viper was the lightest, and took the most power, but the clutch assembly is all wrong, and just won't work.

I think it's a good idea to buy an affordable gearbox that fits with the minimum modification, T56 are rated for fitment to mass produced cars based on GVM (weight of vehicle), as such they have to be rated for strength and longevity.
I'm sure the holden box is strong enough for a 1000-1200 kg car, a heaver vehicle loads up the transmission more due to traction and the need to use lower gears more...

The TUET6000 (Holden) is rated for 1550kg car.

I haven't listed the mods yet :( but have posted a few pics :)

Oh, I thought the commodores were using 1386-000-022 model. Must be the older ones, the SS with the LS1 in it.

I was going to be rude and ask how much you paid for the LS3 crate motor, but after reading the Miata forum thread, I am guessing you work for Ebbetts and would have paid close to cost for it, same with the gearbox.

The LS1 motors in NZ seem pretty expensive for what they are and the age of them.

V8 Engine swap

Post by LS3V8MX5 » Fri Nov 12, 2010 4:10 pm

I think I got a pretty good deal :)

Everything on my car is new, it has not been inexpensive, but on the other
hand I've done over 10,000km without anything breaking, falling off or
needing topping up- except for the FUEL TANK!

Engine $7.5k
ECU/ Alloy Flywheel/ etc. $5.6k
Gearbox $7.7k
Brakes $3.8k
Headers/Exhaust $1.2k

etc etc etc...

Yeah, pretty good price on the engine, I have been given prices of $5-$6K for a second hand LS1 engines late 90's or $7K for a 2005 LS1, non recond and anything with mileage from 50K-120K on them.

Thinking seriously about sourcing the engine, gearbox, diff direct from the US myself, and bring it all in at the same time with the kit and just share a container that has a bit of spare room.

Need to try and save $$$, my pockets aren't as deep

Number plate is a bit of a giveaway ;)

Top conversion though, good effort!

Just been talking to Flying Miata this morning, apparently they have just purchased a NB with the intention of putting a LS motor into it, I assume for sorting out a kit for it.

Was trying to do to many things at the same time, was supposed to have typed NC. They have a picky of it on their website as it is at the moment (they have only just got it). As the comment say's, might need a bit more of a buff out.
