Intercooler piping

Post by WideOpenThrottle » Wed Jun 16, 2010 4:06 pm

Whats best aluminium which is lightweight or stainless which is polished so giving better airflow [or is it irrelevant]?
May be it comes down to price?
Penny for your thoughts.

Intercooler piping

I went with Aluminium, tho I don't recall it being particularly rough inside ?  Al also conducts (sheds) heat better so also does some 'intercooling' of its own before hitting the proper IC.  Corky Bell measured it at one point...

A note - Corky Bell was doing some testing and discovered that steel IC pipes drop the air temperature by about 12F per 12" of piping. CF pipes would radiate far less, aluminum would radiate more. So CF pipes would actually increase your intake temps.

If one were to do it again (not that you were asking that) ;)  I'd consider doing Al pre-IC, and stainless post-IC since it has a fairly poor heat conductivity so would help to insulate the cool air.   And stainless looks better than manky exhaust wrap, haha.

my 2c ... ;-]
