NC Exhaust Note

Post by Neal » Thu Jul 30, 2009 5:17 pm

I have just bought a 2006 2.0 litre MX5 auto. It has twin exhaust outlets. How can I make it sound more "manly"? Would removing the centre muffler do the trick?
Neal.

Removing the center muffler (resonator) will unfortunately make a horrible din, and give the factory tuning a kick in the teeth.

Best move would be to exchange the OEM rear muffler out, for a sporty version of your choice.

When you make an exhaust system only louder you are essentially "Farting at thunder", when it comes to going faster!

Don't be a big bore

I think my suggestion would be to go and see an exhaust specialist, tell them what you want to achieve and don't pay if they don't achieve it. They would probably want to replace the muffler and (all? - dunno what is on an NC) resonator(s) as minimum.

Mazda spent a very long time designing the exhaust note for the NA, not sure about the NB/NC though and I can't say I've really listened to the NC exhaust.

I still have my full NA factory setup (including cat etc) after 10 years...although, I have many other vehicle changes - I quite like the exhaust note. It does change with an improved intake setup though...

if you want an angry sound add a "pod" filter it will make it sound angry when you are giving it S!@# but will still make it nice to drive on trips etc (not deep drony nasty boy racer sound)
give it a go before the exhaust and see what you think then look at exhausts from there. plus its alot cheaper

I have had my NC for a couple of years and would also like a "sportier' exhaust note. I have followed the USA Miata forum on this topic and there is a lot of different opinions re what works best. if you don't get it right, you can end up with a lot of droning or "popping". Some say that removing the resonator works fine. THis is what I would try first, but ensure that it can be put back in if you don't like the result. If you go down the 'replacing rear exhaust' route it does become quite expensive because it usually means splitting the exhaust through two small mufflers. I have been waiting for something definative that everyone in the States seems to be happy with, but it hasn't happened as yet!

The Miata forum in the USA seems to like the Roadstersport 2 rear muffler the best. Read about it in the link below. As it says, they have taken a lot of time and effort to get it right, so I think that our "local" exhaust companies wouldn't be able to come up with anything near as good. However the Roadstersport 2 doesn't come cheap.

Congratulations for biting the bullet!! can you tell me if it is much louder at idle and at what revs can you really start to hear it.
Finally can you tell me what the cost was landed in NZ. The lack of a sporty exhaust noise in mine is really starting to annoy me!!

Landed cost $803 including airfreight. Nice low pitched rumble at idle and at low revs. Pitch gets higher as revs increase and I prefer the low rumble. Make yourself known at next meet and have a listen - white car rego DHG301. :D
