Hi fellow members -has anyone put a 1600 GTI turbo motor into an Na6? & is it complicated.Cheers for any advice.

Use the archive search on this forum and you will find this has been asked often, the answer yes you can, you can fit anything, but yes it's complicated and full of problems, from the sump being wrong, the oil pick-up is at the wrong end of the engine, gearbox fitting issues etc etc. Many many people has thought about this and all that I know of have ended up gluing the turbo onto the standard engine. And many are running at 12 PSI with stock internals which will give you 200RWHP which is very very nice.

If you are in Auckland you are welcome to come look at mine (PM me), there are probably at least 20 turbo MX5's in NZ so I'm sure there will be one in your area.

I also have a Greddy turbo kit for sale which will go on the for sale in the next few days. It's a TD04 turbo (similar to a Garret T25 size), Greddy manifold, down-pipe and the front 2/3 of a 3" exhaust, but a bit rusty, plus some documentation.. The guy I got it off had it rebuilt less than 3000k ago. I bought it for my NA but never got around to fitting it then bought an NB.

Thanks for that Gazda, it seems more like doing up the existing set-up is the way i shall be heading.It would be nice to look at yours at sometime down the track as i live at Muriwai Ta.

Yes! it would appear that i do have the wrong engine.However i shall use as many parts as i can from it to dress up [mainly turbo associated bits] for my existing motor or i may source anMX5 auto engine as they have lower compression which is more suitable for turbo's apparently. Or a GTX 1800.Thanks so far.

it is simply going backwards fitting a low compression motor or a GTi motor to an mx5 when going for a street turbo.

The STOCK mx5 motor will happily run at 12 psi (with good engine management) which is A LOT of horse power. The things that will fail first are the stock differential and gearbox and then finally conrods if you REALLY REALLY PUSH IT.

The stock MX5 engine is very knock resistant and doesnt need a lower compression anyway unless you are going to be running 250RWHP.

By fitting a low comp engine you are handicapping yourself right from the start. All you will end up with is a car that needs 15psi instead of 12 psi to make the same HP and it will be less responsive when on light throttle and tip in.

YOU ARE BETTER OFF KEEPING THE STOCK MX5 ENGINE and putting your money and effort into areas that NEED to be done such as clutch and diff for starters.There are LOTS of things that you should do instead of upgrading your block.

Mmmmm! so what about track days at Taupo & Pukekohe as i intend to spend some time at both,not as a serious racer, more for the fun factor.My stock motor is well into the high end of 200 thous'. km so probably need to recondition this or get another engine with low km.I need to find out what it might cost to do-up my existing motor first i suppose!

if your going to track the car then cooling will be important.
you should look at doing a dual feed fuel rail and the coolant re route if long track sessions are a regular occurance.

Theres only a few things that will kill a miata engine and thats heat/knock and oil problems. a race engine still doesnt "need" low compression unless your pushing BIG HP.

Don at autoways has a genuine 260RWHP car at his work shop which used to live in Tauranga. and that car is "holy crap" fast.very very scary machine. We did some timing runs with a digital G tec and spat out several 5.1 second 0-100 times on crappy chip seal road and not very sticky 17" tyres.some sticky tyres would have seen sub 5 second runs! :P

200RWHP is about the sweet spot for the mx5 as it means you can keep stock cooling system and driveline in tact for a reasonble amount of time.

If i end up with more than 200HP it will great but not intentional as i am looking for a lightweight car too!
