Tuneing a supercharged NA

Post by DBM58 » Fri Nov 30, 2007 10:39 am

I have an NA out of the MazdaSpeed factory that has been fitted with a Sebring supercharger and associated fittings. In mechanical parlance it is "running like a dog". Can anyone suggest where I can take it in Auckland for a good tune-up.

Thanks
David

Did you ever do the O2 sensor?

Sorry no idea about a tuning place. Would a Mazda dealer have a plug it tool that could tell what’s going on? I would think it best to stick with a tuning specialist place as they have all the gear that can find such things as a faulty injector.

Chris Tarrant gave me the oxygen sensor that he took off his car - replaced it with a wide band type. I fitted it and it made no difference. From that and the fact that it was working on his car, it would seem that the problem was elsewhere.

I did take the car to Mazda (Manukau) who used their diagnostic tools to say they could not detect any faults - that would rule out leaky hoses too.

what's the symptoms?

If we can't help, then perhaps Glenn at Rotary Power. I guess he's seen his share of superchargers :)

I know that Matt spent a long arduous time trying to tune it previous to you. There is probably some history here (from the old list). I remember he had problems with injector size and a few other things (I believe it is back to stock injectors though)

Does it have an aftermarket ECU?

Z's point about the ECU is a good one to raise. (I know it's stock) If all
seems OK then you could consider a piggy back ECU such as the e-manage Blue.
Second hand for about $500 and then you can really tune the car for the
supercharger... it's all money and hassles though isn't it. Fingers crossed
you can find something simple that everyone has missed.

You may want to give Don at Autoway Services in Hamilton ph 07 847 5484 a ring as I know he did a lot of work on it for Matt trying to get it to run ok.

That was about 4 years ago and I guess even the best of tune ups don’t last for ever!!

what is the setup of the car??
what injectors?
what airflow meter?
what fuel pump?
whats the setup of the cam cover vent pipes?

It has to be either an air leak somewhere, incorrect fuel pressure, or one of the sensors is dodgy such as the AFM,or TPS. Do you know if the AFM has ahd its clock spring adjusted any? this may have happened if Matt put in bigger injectors

if you really wanted to fix it up then an emanage BLUE (not ultimate)and some Nissan skyline 270cc injectors would be a great solution.

Yes - I hate to say it David, but I think by the time you spend money &
time on all the possible fixes, you'd be better off starting with an
aftermarket ECU. They are so much more configureable and can give you
better feedback to let you know what is going on.

As for brand etc, that is not my area - and as you know my
supercharger/intercooler etc is still sitting in its boxes so I
shouldn't really comment ;)

Adding power to an MX5 is a bit like that boat analogy... something
about a hole in the water that you pour money into? ;)

I know SLYDIT says he spent $3k on his FI setup, but I think the hours
of training/research/install/fabricating/maintenance/tuning time etc etc
probably aren't included in that... right Glenn?! You either learn &
find the time to do it yourself, or you pay someone to do it for you
(which can quickly add up).

BTW Glenn - how much is the emanage BLUE? I will need an ECU one day if
I ever find the time to install the SC.

cheers

how much was the Emanage?

ummmwell lets see if i remember correctly...US$420.....i got it from the states from here...
http://www.mohdparts.com/emanage/index.html

at the time,it worked out to be about NZ$700 air freighted from the states(i ordered it friday night and it was on my doorstep tuesday morning! )

i got the emanage/support tool/ignition harness package and i also had to buy a General motors 2 bar map sensor from summit racing which was about NZ$100 including airfreight form the states

its a great package for most setups that will see around 200RWHP which is plenty really.

Right now if i were to do it again id get a megasquirt, now that its all sorted out(which it wasnt when i built my turbo)

Tuning a supercharged NA

Hey Slydit,,, I hope you’re not emailing during work time J

There are e-manage Blues on TradeMe sometimes for about $500. But I think there is an old and new version?? I can’t recall what the old one couldn’t do, Slydit may be able to advise you…in fact we have a true E-manage guru right here!

Also there is a guy on eBay who sells stuff from Hong Kong, I was looking at an GReddy (they make the e-manage) EC-01 boost control, screen and logger, it’s $950 here and $550 landed from him. I emailed 3 of his past buyers (eBay rocks) who got the same thing and two replied, both said goods are perfect no hassles, he has lots of good feedback.

E-Manage may well not fix your idle problems as it kick in a bit higher up the rev range. For full range control you’ll need a link, so if you go Miata LINK, talk to me, I have a Mk1 Ver I bought a while ago for my NA turbo that never happened. I had the whole thing bench tested by Link. It comes with both the NZ and latest Flyin Miata software (1600cc only).

the very early versions of the emange blue required some soldering inside to run the new (1.25) software which has extra functions such as vtec and NVCS control and acceleration enrichment..not absolutley needed, but nice to have.
