best turbo for a mx5 1.8L

Post by peewee69 » Fri Sep 30, 2016 12:44 pm

hi guys just wanted to now what turbo would be best for a 1.8L mx and what rpm it kicks in and what power you could get out of it. also what do you guys think of a t3/t4 turbo on a mx (power and rpm ect) and what flanges fit with what turbos can you fit more than one type of turbo on a flange e.g. td05???

Those are all too big, will be hitting boost too late. Just go with the usual td04 and go from there if you need more

Oh ok i thort the td05 would be ok because on ebay that have a kit for a 1.6l and I was going to get a 1.8 manifold. What are t25/t28's like? Also I'm wanting to get 200kw atw as a minimum. What turbo would be best for that? Teamjelly said td05 would work best. Thanks for the reply.

I used both TD04 and T28. The TD04 gave around 165hp atw at 7psi and the T28 235hp at 10psi. The TD04 was on full boost by about 3000 rpm from memory, and the T28 at 4500. I'd agree with Siren that the TD05 would be too big.

You won't get 200kW with a TD04, the compressor isn't big enough to flow the necessary amount of air. It should be possible with a T28 but the pressure required is dependant on the flow characteristics of the inlet tract and the head. I know from cars that I raced against that I was getting as much power from 10psi with a worked head as others were getting at 15psi with a standard head. It's therefore difficult to say what boost you would need to get 200kw.

The T25 and T28 exhaust flange dimension are the same. T3 is different and T4 different again. From what I have read compatibility with TD series turbos seems variable, depending on what vehicle the turbo was originally fitted to (as opposed to buying a new, off the shelf T series from Garrett).

The T25/T28 doesn't seem to be a very common hybrid, compared to the T3/T4. In theory it sounds like a good combination for a 1600 engine, the quick spool up of the T25 exhaust turbine combined with the bigger compressor wheel of the T28. But in practice maybe it doesn't work ???

With regard to head design, I don't think you will find much printed on this. The good engine builders keep their ideas very secret. This isn't just for MX5 engines, all the top flight engine builders are the same.

i don,t really know what sort of spec,s you are after as every thing changes according to what you use i.e manifold design ,inter-cooler size piping size ,exhaust size ,tuning turbo size, ball bearing or plain bearing. it all depends what you are planning to do it for drag racing, drifting, circuit or road as to what is going to work best.

Um im not sure what turbo yet and what manifold but I'm going to use 2.5" pipeing and one of the smaller intercooler and 2.5" maby 3" exhaust but will stay stock till i can get a better 1. stock injectors and clutch for now. And mainly street drag and when on cruzes and a bit of a thrash, but it's still my dayly driver.

TD05-16g for an 1800 engine is the best turbo around
I'd tried lots (and I mean lots) and nothing comes close in terms of response, power and price.
300hp at the wheels on 20psi is a doddle with room for more scope.
If you want more topend then you can put on a TD05-20g
If you want more response you can fit a VF23 or TD04-L
All the Subaru turbos are interchangeable - so it's easy to get exactly what you want -
Dirt cheap too - I see Scarles is (was) selling brand new TD04L for $300 with a years warranty
Yes - they are a Chinese turbo but then ALL garrett turbos are made in China despite what many may claim.
And I've never seen a Chinese TD series turbo fail to date.
If you want a T28- then a S15 Blacktop version is the pick of the bunch
