i have just bought a mx5 with a BZ8G running a super charger.

Forged pistons
Ported and polished internals
GTR injectors
Intercooler
Link Computer
Aftermarket clutch

Engine from Mazda Familia GTR turbo
Complete rebuild by Hensen & Murray
Was told it could handle up to 400hp.

Installed and tuned by DTECH Tauranga
Dyno figures
1800cc 113.094Kw @ 5883rpm
201.894 N.m Torque @ 4289rpm

I plan to switch it over to a turbo setup.
i guess i will start kind of a build thread.
because im new to Mazda's i dont know what is interchangeable..
I am m finding it very difficult to locate aftermarket exhaust manifolds for the BZ8G engine after some reading i have dog up some info stating that a mx5 manifold will fit a BZ8G head.

Can anyone verify this for me and if its true i assume the 1.8L-1.6L mx5 have the same exhaust flange on the head , same bolt pattern ?

why go the turbo route when the supercharger is installed and working fine?

Sounds like a good foundation to build it up!

The 1600 and 1800 bore spacing is different, so manifolds there aren't interchangeable, tho a BP one should fit on yours... but a Familia manifold points the other way to a mx5 one.

Mine made "only" ~220 rwhp but was a quick wee beastie ... something under 300 should be about perfect, unless you can handle breaking stuff on a more regular basis

What on earth is a BZ8G engine? Theres B6ZE(1600) and BP/BPT(1800) engines. In short the flanges are different between 1600 and 1800 heads

Because building an engine to handle a turbo is similar to building one to handle an SC (apart from fabrication of the manifold/downpipe) it makes sense to swap over to a turbo eventually.

When I first got my car I thought "Wow, this much power is amazing, I'll be happy with this forever!" then someone told me I'd get sick of it and want more, I didn't believe them, I was just so happy and content. Months down the track of daily driving and generally having a good time with the car, I'm understanding what they meant and I already feel like building an engine to handle more.

There's more room to expand with a turbo.

I'm not being biased and I can't answer for Tony, but that's what I imagine how he feels.

How much boost is this thing running?

it's from the mazda famila GTR spec.

well simply, a super charger is very boring to drive compared to turbo charger (also has a shallow depth of potential). the supercharger use's to much fuel, there is no real way to drive it economically.

there is nothing like the insane rush of power that creeps up on you from a turbo charger. i have plenty of experience with this turbo charging high compression honda engines in my garage at home.

well you are correct the build's are almost the same , after all pressure is equal and opposite in all direction's regardless of it source. im waiting to hear how much psi it is running i fly into nz next week to pick on the mx5.

its the same engine thats in a GTX, bpt? the difference is in turbo size and sodium filled valves for dissipating heat. bigger injectors few other small differences, over all a stronger motor it was used in the Mazda rally cars but the flanges are the same . so dose a mx5 exhaust manifold fit a gtx/gtr 1.8L head?

Pretty sure the 1800 engine is longer than the 1600, so no, exhaust manifolds aren't interchangeable.

Easiest way is do a google image search of exhaust flanges, there are some cad drawings out there with measurements.

Thank you for link, from reading what you sent me the 1.8l has different exhaust and intake manifolds because of the bore spacing differences.

however it dose appear that the 1.8l mx5 engine is part of the same family group as the bpt engines (GTR/GTX). a 1.8L mx5 turbo manifold should fit a bpt gtr 1.8L engine and vice versa.

"In 1994 the need to meet emissions standards and to confront cries for more power in the Miata was answered by using the 1.8 DOHC motor that has been in the Protege since 1990. It is also a ‘B’ family member but has a longer bore spacing to accommodate the larger 83mm pistons. The stroke was also increased to 85mm (both the 1.6 and 1.8 DOHC have the same 221.5mm block deck height and 134mm head height). The 1.8 is the same design and is just as robust as the 1.6. It has the same rods, same oil-cooled pistons, same oil passages, same head design and same crank design (FYI, The Japanese/Austr market version of the Protege got a turbo version of the 1.8, the GTR and GTX 'BPT' motor). Unlike the 1.6 though, the auto trans version of the 1.8 was not changed at all"

purchased some Volkracing CONCAVE wheels tyres and turbo gear/

15x8" Front
15x9" Rears
4x100
Offset : 25p front and 18p rear

down pipe, manifold and a bunch of other bits to go with it, to suit a gt28 s15 turbo.
Compressor wheel Inducer 54.2mm / Exducer 71mm
Trim 58
Turbine Wheel Inducer 53.8mm / Exducer 46.9mm

and some Tein adjustable suspension.

pics to come. will be removing supercharger in a weeks time.

Re-located the throttle body . now running N/a,

take not of the horey throttle cable mount. its only temp so it can be moved, will have alloy a bracket welded on.

still need to find a standard mx5 throttle cable, will start on the turbo setup next week.

not really... you can use a stock 1.8l mx5 exhaust manifold.. just have to brace the super charger, relocate throttle body. the rest is no different than a turbo setup..... i agree that its a waste of time. hence converting to turbo.

i will take a picture of the chassis stamps it was a 1.6 factory mazdaspeed supercharged mx5.

and i have all the paper work on the car including the gtr engine transplant
