What petrol do you use?
I, as most of us I guess only uses 95 octane petrol in my car. What I would like to know does anyone use anything else?
Gull has a 98 octane rated fuel but is it any good or just a waste of time? I dont want to open a can of worms here just want to know if there is any point trying the 98 octane rated fuel or not. And if you think it is worth it then where is the best place to buy the fuel?
My car is supercharged and running advanced ignition.

Really? Wouldn't that be severely limiting your car even with a tune?jif wrote:91 octane for my turbo'd na8!!
I drove a friends sisters turbo Forester and it was horrendously lacking in power living on 91, stark difference when I drove an older model on 98, felt like a much faster car.
As for my MX5, standard 1.6 running 91. Has exhaust/intake modification but thats it. Nice and frugal. I do wonder what benefits 95 would give me though.

I run 91 on my 1.6NA....
I tried 96 for a while, and although the performance was noticeably better, for my general daily driver needs I switched back to 91 simply due to the cost.
with a lot of open road driving, I found fuel efficiency to be slightly better on 96 but town driving (with many stop-starts) I found that 91 and 96 were the same so I chose the cheaper fuel.

Orange fuel cap is Jap for high grade fuel required,Used to see Skylines many years ago when i worked for a importer and RWD Cefiro's,Usually DOHC Turbo stuff,Generally late 80's early 90's stuff of high tune,Later model cars can compensate for crap fuel.
Higher grade fuel does keep engine oil cleaner for longer and does help slow sludge build up.
We see engines in from Japan out of cars from Japan with over 100,000km on them and are like new along the cam gear,Swear some have had no oil they are that clean.
Cars will run OK on 91,but it doesn't do the engine any favors

it had a knock sensor, wideband o2, link ecu and lived like that for years. So it might've done a smidge better on 95 or whatever, but it obviously was close-ish, but not too close to the edge. Basically the FM tune with about 5* added back in .
Definitely not one of those super-retarded (literally) factory tunes. No warranty = no worries !
Having said that, a SC engine will be seeing higher intake temps so there's less safety margin to work with there...

here's a good little summary article, mostly talking about ethanol, but has these little gems in it:http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/05/autom ... hanol.html
"Using high-octane premium-grade gas in an engine that does not require it offers no benefit."
“You make the dog like the dog food,” and “E15 is the answer to the question nobody asked,” - Mercedes fuels engineer talking about ethanol... lolz.

i only ever use 98 on the turbo. When running 98 i am only pulling 4 degrees timing at 7 psi...that means you could run stock timing of 10 degrees with my setup. i once did a club run down to wellington and my mpg was exactly the same as the non turbo cars..power and economy...gotta love it!

Well I've been running my MX5 on 95 for a week now. There does seem to be a difference, not more power or anything but it doesn't struggle at low revs as much.
Seems to be running nicely, I think I'll stick to 95. 250,000 k's on the clock as of last week too. Not sure if its just me, but the 95 seems to get rid of some of the tick I had on cold starts? I do regular oil changes but it always came back within 1000 k's.

93 NZ new 1800, I ran it on 95 for 1600ks in a trip around the SI. I got the same economy as the GF does using 91 around town
She won't put anything other than 91 in it because it costs more
On 95 it does seem to run just a little smoother, on 91 it has a barely noticeable stutter around 1500 rpm on part throttle
side note, needs a fuel light!
