B6 head compatability

Post by stooji » Sat Oct 06, 2012 12:07 pm

hey guys.

been lurking for a bit, picked up an NA6 about 6 months ago and have started to fiddle around with a bit of stuff on it.

i am planning to do a bit of a top end freshen up, and i was thinking about getting a second hand head for it to get overhauled so i can keep the 'car broken' time to a minimum.

as a result, i was wondering if anyone can tell me how similar other B6 heads are to whats in the mx5? can i just go and lift something off a laser or 323 from pickapart or similar?

the current head also has a fair bit of lifter noise, i seem to remember reading something at one stage about mazda releasing an updated lifter with larger oil ports or something. anyone shed any light?

cheers for your thoughts :)

My 1600cc mx engine has the 1600cc 323 turbo crankshaft,con-rods,exhaust & intake camshafts, valves, springs & several lifters that were a direct fit as checked over by my engine reconditioner.
I would have used the pistons too but i had to bore oversize so that made them redundant so if anybody needs them???

I could put the complete head on too as it is identical apart from the coolant which exits the rear but handy if you want to do a coolant re-route.
Head gasket,water-pump,cam gears, cam covers, timing plates, exhaust & manifold gaskets, all will fit. Even the oil-pump will too i think but you will have the dipstick at the front of the engine & might hit something.
Cylinder block wont mate directly to the gearbox & the sump is too deep.
Coils & Cas will fit.

cheers for the info. also tossing up the idea of a 1.8 swap, since the current B6 has its fair share of kms on it too.

struggling to find anything decent / not seemingly overpriced... anyone care to make a recommendation?
