Megasquirt wont communicate
Somethings amiss...cant get communication on two of our lap-tops or our home PC
Unable to download usb cable drive from the supplied cd or the internet on the two lap-tops.
Our home pc downloaded a driver for the usb but still wont communicate even tho it looks like it is ok!
I'll admit to being fairly un-geeklike but this is driving me to distraction!
Read somewhere i might have to get a better quality usb cable so will hunt one down.

Hi last_resort
Just had an email from DiyAutotune and they said something similar.
Also got another driver cd from Jared [NZ agent] and now the laptop with Windows XP has accepted the install so will be giving it a go on the car soon to see if i can make some headway.
So it does appear at this stage alot of my issues were with the original usb driver cd being semi-kaput!!

Update
Latest email on tune progress.....
Hi Gary
Just finished tuning the car on the stock boost.
Started out at 140hp at the wheels, which wasn't too bad, But by the time I'd finished managed to squeeze 171hp ATW
The intercooler system is very efficient, and with the lowered compression, was able to eventually bring it to 20' timing on full load with no hint of detonation.
Could probably squeeze another 10hp or so if I wanted to tune it on the ragged edge, but prefer it to be nice and safe.
Just come back from a drive around the block, and it's very impressive, especially in 3rd gear.
Would absolute hose a R34 Turbo skyline that I tuned last week.
Power peaks at 5750rpm then starts to slowly taper off, which I suspect is either the intercooler piping, or most likely just the exhaust housing nearing it's maximum flow.
170hp ATW equates to pretty much 200hp at the flywheel, which is about what we expected.
Ordered a couple of the boost taps, I plan on using one on my Turbo V6 MR2, and good to have a spare in stock, if you decide to keep it at 9 psi. but if you want to crank it up, then they should arrive tomorrow, so should be good for Saturday regardless,
Drives nice and smooth, starts up easily when cold and hot, so we should be able to do the bulk of the economy tuning is less than an hour on Saturday.
cheers
Jared

I'd recommend get the ECU in and fiddle with it before you SC the car. If you have a problem, you've only got 1 thing you've changed at a time. Tuning them isnt too bad if you understand what the tables all look like and what they mean, otherwise maybe leave it to the prosAngreal wrote:I guess self tuning is somewhat difficult to do? Since I plan to hook my new ecu up when the sc goes in , do you self tune it so its drivable then get it dyno tuned afterwards so its running a lot more efficient? By self tune I mean get some maps which do the job but not very well?

Latest email.....cant seem to upload read-out
Hi Gary
Here's the Dyno power/torque readout, also the Air/fuel Trace,
They are in JPEG format so will open up fine in any photo viewer
You can see at 3600 rpm it's making the power of a stock MX5 at 6500, so is very torquey for such a small motor.
Unless you plan on racing the thing permanently I wouldn't go up in size in turbo, as while it would make alot more topend, would feel slower on the road, It gets 7psi at only 2600 rpm, so feels more like a supercharged engine than a turbocharged. Which I like alot.
Regards
Jared

Picked up my car and dove back to AK yesterday. All good at the top of the Kaimais but found on the way home it was 'missing' a bit on vacumm [cruise no-load] so Jared sent me through a revised map to try. Power feels similar to my old set-up,definately more torquey & less laggy so all in all more road friendly.Just wish i knew the HP of my old set-up now.
Hi Gary
It's exactly the same tune just with a bit more fuel in the cruise part of the mapping
So just power up the ECU, with the laptop connected
then go to
FILE
OPEN
and click on the tune that I sent, it will load up
Hit BURN TO ECU and you'll be done
Probably a good idea to save it somewhere safe too
Amazing the difference that height can make to a tune, had almost exactly the same thing with a GTR skyline I did a few months back, we had it running perfect here, and the guy used it everyday, so wanted the very best in fuel economy, so we ran it real lean at light load, worked fine, but when he got to auckland, it had just a small surge (overly lean mixture) and would hunt a bit, gave it another 5% fuel and it's been fine ever since.
Don't worry about it hurting the engine the way it is, the mixtures are nice and safe under boost, and overly lean at very light load won't damage the engine.
Hows this for the efficiency of your B6T engine
Ran an old 2L SOHC Turbo Starion up on the dyno yesterday, had a similar sized turbo to yours, maybe a bit bigger,
Even though it had all the goodies, big exhaust, intercooler, etc, we couldn't get more power than 160 at the wheels, even on 10psi
Yet your little 1600 managed to hit 170 on less boost, the starion experienced mild detonation on 18' timing, yet yours had 22' on full load and not even a hint.
Guess size isn't everything, wasn't really that quick on the road either, the mx5 would have eaten it for lunch
Cheers
Jared
