Diff Ring and pinion gears (Final Drive)
Hey guys
Wondering if anyone knows the easiest way to get a 3.63 (Or 3.308 ha) ratio Ring and pinion set over here.
Wanting one that will fit with a 1.8 size diff rather than the 1.6 one but I will take a 1.6 one if that is all I can find.
Did our NB's come with them? As far as I can tell so far for the 3.63 I would need one from an Aus Spec NB MSM or an old early 80's RWD 626. As for the 3.308 it would need to be from a specifically optioned early 80s b2000 diesel and would require modding to fit.
Anyone looked into this? A lot of the info on the net is rather out dated and I don't want to go paying $500 US just for a Ring and Pinion O.o

Sure!
I love the gearing of the NA 5 speed and diff however I now have a 6 speed to drop in.
If you drop in the 6 speed on the factory NA diff the gearing gets really short, the 6th gear ends up shorter than the normal 5th gear. This means your using more gas when cruising and First is almost pointless.
With the ratios I'm after the 6 speed 1-5 ends up almost bang on the factory 5 speed ratios (either slightly above or below depending) with 6 just being an extra gear for motorway cruising etc. My revs at 100kph with this combo would be 2480rpm or 2726rpm depending again. Factory 5 speed combo is 3113rpm and 6 speed + NA6 diff would be 3224 rpm.
And as i will be turbo soon enough the amount of acceleration i will lose from this will be countered by the extra power I will be putting in
Hope that covers it ha

Jeez, that's just about redline on one of those V8s!Donovan wrote:hmm, according to their calculator, at 1500rpm, I am either going to be going 98km/h or about 110km/h, problem is I don't know what ratio the Holden diff is, could either be 3.1 or 3.4 from what I have looked up about it.
Cool sunroof bro...

was thinking about this gear ratio stuff after talking to you (Born Disturbed) last night.
I know you are looking for higher ratios, but I would give a 4.1 a go and see how you go from there.
Theoretically my car with a 4.1 and 195/50/15 will do 225kmh in 6th at 7200 rpm.
do you really need much more than that? I cant think of a track in NZ where that would hold you back.
Plus 4.1's are easiest to find I would imagine.
Just some thoughts....

mazda motorsports in the states do them and also i beleive that some of the early Kias used mazda diffs with varying ratios

Re: Diff Ring and pinion gears (Final Drive)
I think you will find that 6 speed NBs had the 3.636 diff ratio you are looking for, in which case the NZ dismantlers are your best bet. Brownie or Ross are good places to start.Born_disturbed wrote:Hey guys

No.Mad Kiwi wrote:Please correct me if I am wrong but I think you have all been talking about the the 3.63 as if it was the 3.9 diff that came in the later 6 speed models....
Isn't the 3.63 the rare as, hard to get, only came in the last of the rwd 626's...diff?
Find a dismantler with a 6 speed NB and ask them to do the math.
