What's the budget like?
I currently use a Nissan Xtrail for snow duty (not that I've had time this year

). Handling isn't bad for an SUV, indestructible and wipe down interior is really handy when piling into the car full of soaking gear at the end of the day.
NVH is not as great as it could be though. If we didn't need the tall load bay, we'd be using a late model Legacy. Superb road manners, very smooth, very little driver fatigue. Would recommend 3.0L with the excellent sound system and extra bits.
The '98~ models are also superb, very good value for money too. Have done a couple of Auckland - Ruapehu trips in a 3.0L and a 2.5L lancaster/outback.
I haven't had prolonged drives in the older Legacy's but I'm sure they're just as well mannered for snow trips
