One of the things that most new owners seem to want to know are "What are the weak points/problems with MX5s?" Seems to me that one of the majors relates to crankshaft failures on some of the early cars.
To help identify the problems and which crank is fitted to your car - remembering that it MAY have been changed so year/VIN is not necessarily a good indicator, there is a very good article on Miata.net here:

The are 2 main problems with the earlier MX-5's. The crank nose and rear brake calipers. I have two engines at home with the nose problem and have swapped about 5 engines on members cars because of it. (The easiest and cheapest fix was to do an engine swap).
The other problem was rear brake calipers. They have a problem with the adjustment on them and end up seizing. Thats why the rears are about three times the price of fronts at Mazspares.
