Ash tray lid - sad and faded... technical tip (ok not so tec
Hi All
mid last year a few of us traded ash tray lids as they were faded or
discoloured. Mine was because I used Mothers Vinyl roof cleaner to clean mine
and it went a dirty brown colour. Anyway I tried Armourall (sp?) etc with no
success. A month or two ago I gave it a thick coat with some "Simoniz Black
Diamond, Trim and Bumper polish" left it for a few ours than gave it a polish.
And here I am a couple of months later and still looking like new, and didn't
come off on my clothes either.

Hi Gazza,
On my honeymoon, my wife managed to get sunblock all over the centre console.
I used some wipes to get it off and the next day the ashtray was a pooey
brown. I tied a few products to bring back the black but to no availe. I
even began the hunt for one out of a wreckers and got quotes on a new one.
Then, one day, my wife came home with a 125ml bottle of 'Armor All Protectant
Original'.
Good as new.
Shes some woman!
Alex.

Before I went on what may be referred to in the archives of the list
(said with GSOH) my NZ drive-about, I decided to clean up the ash-tray
which obviously was extensively used by the previous Japanese owner. I
soaked it in an everyday commercial cleaner (Mr Muscle with orange oil).
After taking it apart (only tool required is a small head screw-driver)
I performed a repeated process (about 3x) of soaking followed by a brief
non-abrasive scrubbing, the rinse, the repeat, resulting in it getting
it as good as new. Amazing the amount of tar and nicotine that had
collected over a period of time (I have a 91, owned it for 7 years and
don't smoke - do the math).
