Road Maintenance

Post by Simon Lord » Fri Mar 18, 2005 6:09 pm

Dear All

The following is from a UK website - thought you might be interested. Not
sure how NZ roads would compare, but it'll make me think twice before
condemning them. Mind you, UK roads might be rather better built in the
first place...

Road Maintenance

NZ roads are quite different. In the UK (& most of the world) they use what we call Hot Mix, it is laid with a paving machine and gives a smooth hard finish. It is expensive, about $16 a sq metre, versus about $6 for the chip seal we use here.
Transit NZ says in it's school resource
"Although these roads are cheaper to build, Transit has to be vigilant in regard to maintenance: these roads are fragile, thin and flexible by international standards. They bend under trucks far more that roads do in Europe or America where they are made out of thicker, stronger layers of asphalt."
http://www.transit.govt.nz/Schools%20Pa ... 0Questions.
I would be a little suspicious of this survey, it was done for the industry, and is not independent.

Simon, SHAME ON YOU!!
In this enlightened world of political correctness i
feel the need to tell you that "road maintenance, and
Road works" has now been changed to
"pavement rehabilitation".
Only problem is... that in our area the roads usually
are worse once theyve been worked on !!!

Road Maintenance

Having lived in UK for four years (in eighties and nineties) I can say,
based on extensive experience of touring all over UK and Europe, that the
roads there are orders of magnitude better in design, build and maintenance.
In particular, they have a great system of motorways and a strictly enforced
highway code, but interestingly speed is the last thing the police worry
about on the motorways. Safe driving is what they enforce. Similar
experience in France and Germany.

Roads in the cities, towns and villages were also quite good. Surprising
really considering the damage from ice, snow, very heavy traffic volumes and
lots of rain!

There is no question that road users here are being ripped off by the
government through the various revenue collection strategies they have in
place. And they have the audacity to raise another 5 cents a litre for
roads. Why isn't someone asking what has happened to all the revenue
already raised over the years through road and fuel taxes???
