Short Shifter - How can I make one?

Post by poison » Tue Mar 08, 2005 10:42 pm

Hi all

I had a sit in an MX with a short shift fitted and it seemed good. Has anyone
seen a good article on how to modify the factory one?

Saw a MKII MX in a dark burgundy colour today, never seen that before but
looked very nice.

Just before the Mk2 came out I think there was a limited run of special
edition 'merlot MX 5s. That was a very nice colour too

Cheers Doug

Short Shifter - How can I make one?

Actually it could well have been a MK1 as the Merlot sounds about right, it
was driving towards me in busy traffic and I didn't notice the car at all
until it was very close and realised "WOW it's an MX5" and it was gone before
I had time to really think about it.

Cheers

Short Shifter - How can I make one?

Hi Gazza, check out my report in the latest topdown re shortshifter. It is not
something you can make yourself ubless you have access to a good engineering
work shop. If you want to have a look at mine, give me a call.
Re Merlot, It was made available in both series 1 and 2. The series 2 , they
have a very light tan interior. I see one (a series 2) going the other way
from me on my way to work. Have a look at www.ellisuttingmotors.co.nz as they
have a series 2 for sale.

Short Shifter - How can I make one?

Post by poison » Wed Mar 09, 2005 7:57 am

Hi Nigel

Thanks for that, went to bed last night and read my nice new Top Down (always
impressed thankyou) and low and behold your article on short shifters. I had
found this link
http://www.seriousauto.com/simpson_desi ... ifter1.htm It
just looks like a copy of the factory one but with a shorter shaft, works but
I imagine I need to modify the bit below to get the best out of it. I have a
lathe (but just a beginner really) so should be able to make anything really.
I'll give you a call one evening and come and have a look at yours thankyou. I
wanted to see you about a couple of other things too but have been tied up
recently.

Cheers

Short Shifter - How can I make one?

Post by MX5PWR » Thu Mar 10, 2005 7:43 am

Hi Gazza, had a look at the site. The shortshifter on there has only had the
part where the gear knob goes shortened. The one in my car as per the topdown
has had a spacer added and the lower part of the shaft lengthened which
changes the fulcrum point giving a much shorter movement at the knob end. Not
a job for the home handyman.

Look forward to catching up when you have time.

Nigel

Graeme - remember that we JAFA's (...*friendly* Akl'ers!) pay more for
insurance that people in other towns. Presumably our cars are worth
more (haha..)

Having said that, my NZI premium just came in at ~$800-ish, over 25,
named driver, 60% NC, alarmed, immobilised, garaged. Maybe they just
like you better ;)
