MX5 - New owner
Hi everyone
I have recently bought a little red MX5 1991 Auto. Am now having fun
driving around with the lid down - especially since summer has finally
arrived.
I am looking for a black tornique (? spelling) to cover the area behind
the seats when the hood is down. Can anyone out there help me find one
or perhaps let me have a pattern to have one made?
Appreciate any feedback
Cathie

Hi Ken - yes definitely interested.
What condition is it in. Is it a factory made black leather cover?
Where do you live?

FYI, "tonneau" is pronounced "tonno"!

I believe that a tonneau is actually something that covers the "cockpit"
area of the car. They are available in full (covers whole area) or half
(cover's passenger side only). The cover to go over the folded roof is
called either a "boot top" or a "top boot" - I forget which.
We got ours with the car and it looks pretty swish when fitted, although you
have to be pretty firm when "hooking" the rubber rail things along the back
(above the boot). Sometimes one will come loose when driving at high speeds
(although not over 100, of course!) and it flaps and can be quite annoying.
We leave ours on most of the time and if it happens to be raining we just
take the other car. It seems fiddly to fit when you first do it, and it's
not an easy shape to fold when it's off!
Ciao

I think you'll find that it is not a 'tonneau' but actually a 'tonneau
cover'. The tonneau was the passenger area of a vehicle behind the front
seats. Originally this was covered to offer protection to passengers in the
rear. Nowdays the area has become that area behind the front seats, not
necessarily for passengers. For many years a tonneau for a sports car
(convertable) was used to cover the whole passenger are including the front
seats. Often zipped along the middle so the cover could be left in place but
opened enough for the driver only.
So I think therefore it should (or can) be called a tonneau cover but not a
tonneau!

I presume all MX 5's come with a tornique cover when new from the factory.
So what happens to them all ??? O.K some cars are now up to15 years old and
have passed through several owners and more than one country, but there seem
to be a lot of covers missing. I never got one with my car. Perhaps
previous owners keep them as a souvineer to remind themsevles of what a fun
little car they used to own.

And the factory ones are black or tan vinyl - don't think I've ever seen
a leather one, but maybe they exist.
There were posts a few days ago discussing price of these if you want to
search the archives.

I admit I just call it the cover, and it is made from vinyl. I assume they
all are (factory ones). My previous post was a tongue in cheek history
lesson only! As far as I know, all cars left the factory with one as they
are needed to protect the inside of the roof from UV light to prevent
deterioration. When you do get one, check it has the straps to tie it around
the roof frame at each side of the car. These are necessary to stop the
cover from flapping around and lifting out of the rear channel. The straps
need to be very tight as well. Some were too long ex factory so worth
checking that and correcting if necessary. One of my straps broke last week
but should be no problem to repair. Got to expect these minor breakages
after 14 years and 189,000km I suppose.
