Motoring Heritage?

Post by Alex Root-Reed » Fri Jan 07, 2005 3:05 am

Just getting the hang of this list!

Might seem like a silly question - but here goes... Just got my first
MX5 - love her to bits, can't bear the thought of spoiling or polluting her.
She is a 1997 limited - completley original. Here's the question: If I
were to add things like scuff plates to the door wells, remote boot release
solenoid or upgrading the stereo will I be corrupting an already highly
respected and admired peice of engeneering?

I would welcome peoples opinion and advice. I have been fortunate enough to
have some great cars over the years - ones that only got better with mods
and refinements. Is the 'five' different? I'd hate to pilage what belongs
to motoring heritage.

Advise quick 'cos I'm thinking scuff plates, remote boot, moving the space
save to underneath... (and more).

Thanks all.

Alex.

Hi Alex, congratulations on your new purchase and may you have many happy
hours of motoring in the MX5,
What car have you purchased? Is it the 97 SR Ltd, and what color?
As for adding extras to the car, scuff plates are a factory option so can
enhance the appearance of the car, boot release is a convenience item which
does not detract from the original concept, and a new stereo will give you
better sound.

What you are looking at doing will be fine, its only when you start changing
things like the wheels for 17 inch chrome mags or putting body kits on etc
that can have an effect on the original concept of the limited edition
cars..

Hi Alex,
Congratulations on your purchase of Mazda's classic sportscar. I'm sure
you're going to enjoy the utmost out of owning it as we have ours. I believe
that one of the beauties of this car is it's accessories aftermarket that
can help to personalise your car or supplement an already seemingly perfect
car. One point though, whatever you decide to add, you are confident & happy
with it. From my viewpoint, please don't ask for others opinions whether you
should/should not do this/that on any little thing, unlike a lot of
correspondence on another forum I've seen. Having said that though, the
Racer-boy look doesn't suit the 5 one bit. Go for it!

Its your car do want you want, most everyone else does :-}, I didn't like
the original rims so got some Volk racing rims and a smaller wooden
steering and few other shiny things, lol.

Be a booring old world if we all did/thought the same. The chrome scuff
plates, vent and speaker surrounds etc I think enhance the basically dark
interior,

Cheers

Alex

Welcome to the list and the MX5 world.

I have to agree with everything said so far - do what YOU want and
like. With 700,000+ made, they won't be collectors items any time soon
(apart from the few genuine 'limited' productions - not to be confused
with the build as many as we can sell 'special'). If yours is a
'limited' production, my advise would be to consider what you want
before doing any non reversible mods.

I personally love the basic, reliable, economical, great looking,
fabulous handling open top joy of our toy. I generally prefer the
mostly original and simple look - however I (and lots of others) believe
it needs a bit more go! Thats the problem with a fabulous handling car
- it feels under powered.

The boldest thing I have done is drill a hole in the upper firewall
panel to fit a Loch Stewart cold air intake for more free revving go.

I believe the 'heritage' of the MX5 is people enjoying them as they see
fit - cruising or thrashing, show room stock or so modified it's barely
an MX5.

Enjoy yours as you see fit, there is no end to the mods you can do. My
first mod suggestion would be timing advance for a few free Nm's.

Ian

Tim, I assume you have a 6 speed, but there's a 5 speed going on
trademe at the moment ... they're interchangeable IIRC.

... Or you could use this to master the fine art of rev-matching ;-)

The 5 speed in my '96 is still pretty good even after 160k km, running
12psi boost and after giving it a hard time at Meremere. Strange
that yours would play up?

Thanks Dez,

Its not that I am asking peoples opinion asuch but rather respecting the MX5
and its following. My other toy is a Harley and I am sensative to other
'Hogs' takes on what I do to the bike and thus what I do to the name. A
brand image is developed on the back of quality, reliability, engeneering
and image. But it is also developed on the back of those who buy into the
name and then what those people do with it. I didn't know at the time of
buying my MX5 (though I had a suspision) that there was the following and
respect of the vehicle there is. Now I know this I am quickly putting my
feelers out and getting the low down on what is "PC" for the car and what is
not. (I must admit - "PC" is not something I generally give a stuff about).
It is interesting what responses I am getting and I am very grateful for
yours.

Keep them comming.

Hey Jeff,

Well, she is NZ new and a 1997 Limited with tan leather, hard top, Merlot
metalic and lovely wheels that I know are an extra just from the way they
stick. I beleive she has an upgraded suspension and I am guessing the
exhuast is original though not stock. She already has remote central
locking and a groovey flush number plate at the front. (The old one was
chipping th bonet - I had to do something!)

(Am I wrong?) I think I will upgrade with stock originals. Tell me more
about the scuff plates you have...

Cheers.

Thanks Ian,

I have so bought the right car. There is heritage - it is unfolding as we
speak.

Scuff plates are the start. You are right though - the better handling the
car, the more you want from it. Its a double posative - there is no car
that delivers accorinding to its balance and handling ('cept maybe the F1
Micheal drives - bless him). The more umph it can deliver, the better the
balance must be. The better the blance - yes, you neeeeed more umph. Ahh,
the joys of motoring.

Thanks again.

Hi Alex,
Welcome aboard.
The MX5, or Miata, and Eunos, as they are known in the US have legions of
fans, why, I don't think anyone can put their finger on it.
You will get as many different answers as there are owners I think.
Unlike the MX's very expensive cousins, or older more established relations,
most people with an MX5 will tell you they are cheap, they go like stink,
stick like gum to your shoe, and you have a wealth of very good options when
it comes to "enhancements"
I would suggest you spread your enquiry have a look at the following sites
and you will soon see the depth of opportunities open to you:

http://www.flyinmiata.com/

http://www.flyinmiata.com/news/links.php

http://www.miata.net/

I would also subscribe to a couple of the US mailing lists, the guys are
very helpful and you soon find its just about a UN of MX5 owners.
Dutch, Aussies, South Americans, guys from the UK just about every one.

The one thing that strikes me is it's a community, everyone has an opinion
and is willing to share it, everyone has had problems and minor issues (and
some major ones) and often you will find a solution or at least someone who
can point you in the right direction.
The major thing is have fun, and enjoy the car.
Again welcome to the clan, and have a great top down 2005.
Cheers
Biff

have a squiz here...

http://www.miata.net/faq/faq3.html
-------
A third leak area has been cropping up lately with older Miatas.
People have reported wetness in the trunk which can be caused by one
of several factors: Dried out weather-stripping around the trunk, a
cracked rain rail on the convertible top, or dried out
weather-stripping around the tail lights. The tail light weather-strip
problem has been appearing more and more frequently on the older
vehicles.

I'm getting mine reconditioned on a slower cheaper basis.

I bought the one on TradeMe so I can keep using the car while mine is
being reconditioned.

The bearing kit is around $400. $200 to take out and put back - 4hours
labour. Apparently the beam that runs down the side of the drive shaft
is a pain to put back.

And a further $400 labour and odds and sods to recondition. I rang a few
places and they where all fairly similar in price.

Obviously I won't need two, so I sell the spare again when I'm finished.

Adrian

another thing worth mentioning.

the gearbox in my '89 1600 failed in 2001.

the mazda dealership in greenlane took 9 weeks to repair it as the parts
were not in NZ and mazda NZ sea freighted them.

of course by the time i complained to mazda NZ (i think 6 weeks in)
airfreight wouldn't have been faster.

it may pay to enquire how the parts are coming if from japan...
