power antenna wire - what does it do?

Post by tim.maggie » Sun Nov 20, 2005 6:11 pm

Re my installation of a new stereo. Have just come across the 'light green
/ yellow' wire that goes to the power aerial. My aerial raises every time
the key is turned on - is that how it should operate or is this green yellow
wire supposed to raise it only when the radio is on (as in another car we
have)? Or does it do something else entirely? Also this new pioneer stereo
doesnt have a connection for the lighting system - do they no longer light
up at night? Tim.

What is the wire connected to at present? I assume it is switched 12 volts
which will cause the antenna to rise when the key is on.Usually the wire
connects to the antenna control wire from the stereo. This outputs 12 volts
when the radio is on and ground when the radio is off (or switched to cd
operation), so controlling the antenna. The antenna itself has a separate
permanent 12 volts connection.
The lighting connection is usually to dim the stereo lighting when the
vehicle lights are on, not provide the actual lighting.

Hi Grant, the light green/yellow aerial power wire comes from the connector
that used to plug into the back of the old stereo.

The mx5 stereo wiring diagram shows it arrowed from this connector terminal
to the 'power antenna'. Tim

If your new stereo has an antenna control connection, then connect the wire
to that. It will then control the antenna so it is up when the radio is on
and down when off. That is it will also be down when using the cd play
function.

Actually, (although I haven't checked this) - it would be more likely
that the connection from the factory stereo (via lt grn/yellow wire)
pulls to ground when the radio is on, and is floating (no connection)
otherwise. Someone might like to check though...

If youre after a black stereo be vary wary of the sony
ones...
I have one and i CANNOT read the diplay AT ALL with
the top down, its completely useless. the only
funtions you can safely perform are Volume and station
changes.. dont even try to adjust the bass treble
etc.

power antenna wire - what does it do?

Post by Grant » Mon Nov 21, 2005 6:14 pm

My Sony and JVC head units in different vehicles output 12volts when the
radio is on, on the antenna control wire. I would have thought it would be
as zorruno suggested (for safety) but mine aren't. I have different JVC head
units in my NA and NB MX5's, both controlling the factory power antennas
from their antenna control output of 12volts when the radio is operating.
Have a look here as well:

power antenna wire - what does it do?

Thanks for all the feedback on this subject guys. Actually my aerial still
goes up as soon as I start the car even with all the stereo gear
disconnected so I would say that someone has played around with the wiring
in the past. Its fine like that really - mx5 aerials have a cheeky little
rake to them so its kinda nice to have it up there even if not in use
(especially on a classy brg!)

So when my fitting kit finally arrives from bloody Auckland via some
overpriced courier whos surprised to learn, after looking at the address,
that there is a south island in this country...

...well I will just leave this wire taped up and not connected. Tim.
