Dear All

Having just returned from a few days following the Targa round (great event,
great driving, great break but I can't recommend staying in Dannevirke -
town motto "Nothing beats Dannevirke") I thought I might ask all you keen
drivers for a bit of advice.

Having come from the UK many years ago, where the Ordnance Survey produced
1:50,000 maps detailed enough to use as the basis of pace notes if you were
brave and had confidence in your navigator, I find most NZ maps a little
lacking in useful information.

Most of the time this doesn't matter, but when you are looking for nice
twisty sealed roads in an unfamiliar area - or even when you just want to
find a sealed route to get from A to B without encroaching on a closed rally
stage - it can be very frustrating. There have been several occasions over
the past few years when, having gone many kilometres down a road, it has
turned to gravel without warning and with no indication of how long the
gravel might last. Yes, I am used to driving on gravel but frankly, I have
better things to do with my time than vacuum all the little nooks and
crannies in the car when I get home...

So... having given up on my old AA map book, what is the best map book on
the market now for this sort of use? The Targa programme in Classic Car had
some good maps in it but didn't seem to acknowledge the source, and the
scale was inconsistent from day to day. They were great for following the
rally from (apart from the fact that all the start/finish markers were
labelled the wrong way round) and more detailed on minor roads than most.

So all you enthusiastic drivers, which publisher produces the best maps?

Hi Simon

I only managed to get 2 days spectating but still very enjoyable. (particularly the roads behind Waitomo getting into the middle of stage 6)

1:50,000 maps are also available in NZ. They are generally pretty good and I actually used one on Labour day to find my way round the wilds of Franklin district for the Prologue stage.

I have been through this discussion before with an avid road rally fan from the UK and I think that the NZ 1:50,000 maps may not be quite as detailed as the UK ones, just because the terrain here is a lot more complex than in the UK.

I also had a Waikato-King Country map that looked like it was the same source as the one in Classic Car but I cannot remember who printed it. I suspect it came from the AA but will check when I get home tonight.

Cheers
Euen

uhh, OK so it's the place in Colorado which does Miatas after getting
fed up with Porsches back in the day. ;-)

Apparently they will send it by cheap old surface or airmail if you
ask them nicely (another thing I found out afterwards) ...

You got to give it to their technical department - I gave them a call to
order and this is what they emailed back:

"Here's the cheap way.

The starter is bolted to the block on back above the engine mount. Pull
that bolt out and weld a 8mm x 1.25mm nut to the top. Then you can
replace the bolt and bolt the knock sensor to the top with a 8mm x
1.25mm bolt. That should work fine.

Let us know if you have any questions."

Now that's service!

Hi Simon,

I use the NZMS 260 series of topographical charts, at 1:50000 scale, for a
lot of the stuff I do at work. They are available from Linz (Land
Information NZ) and most larger booksellers also have a range.

They are single sheet maps, not books of course, but they are detailed and
accurate. They do show road surfaces if you know how to read them and can
make wild assumptions, but some of the mapping data is now pretty old.

New Zealand Topography is a bit more complicated than England so the maps
are quite a bit harder to read

You can also look at 1:50000 on line with
http://www.nztopoonline.linz.govt.nz/ but it is very slow, you can bore down
in scale to about 1:5000

There is a new series of slightly more user friendly maps NZtopo50 about to
be released as well

Regards

Eric

Simon

As a Tararua resident, I'd really like to know what the problem was with
your stay in Dannevirke? I know we are rural, and often thought of as a
backwater, but we do try to make visitors welcome, and the Targa is a really
major event each year for us.

Any feedback you can offer would be appreciated, perhaps you could mail to
info@tararua.com ?

Cheers

ah, so you don't need those extra bits then :)

Euen - from what I hear the new LEM v5 (?) is technically superior
(you could prob. run quad throttle bodies off it), but of course it's
wire-in not plug-in, and without FM's software and support. So you
would be bravely blazing your own trail ... so tell us how it goes !
