Not to mention the cost of fuel - is that the sound of a V8 or the fuel being
sucked out of the tank.
I also like being able to go out to the garage after a couple of weeks and
know that when I turn the key, the MX is going to go, and that I am not going
to have to spend all weekend trying to get the beast to start, and once
started, that I am not going to have to back track the trip to pick up all the
parts that have fallen off.
Anyway Gazza, when you have found the house of your dreams, the mortgage
payment will be a sight lot less than the maintenance on your Yank Tank.

O.K how about you do a bloke thing and seen as you love you mx5 so much how
about you give me some technical advise on my transmission problem. Yes im
afraid I did a girl thing and bought an automatic. How do I go about changing
the plastic bushes on each side of the gear leaver selector. Apparently it's
common for them to wear out. I've bought the bushes. Only $18 but I don't want
to start until I get instructions from some macho MX 5 owners who probably
like to get there hands dirty.(not). I found the Haynes workshop manual no
help at all. You may not know what I'm talking about if you're a hairdresser.

I had to sacrifice the 65 Hillman Imp I'd had for 24 years, no real
contest!! It went to a good home in Hamilton for restoration. My 98 MX5 was
a 60th birthday gift to us. The kids actually want to be seen in the it !!.
Long gone are the days of taking them to school in the IMP, "No, No, dad,
don't take me to the school gate!!" It's every parents right, duty and
responsibility to embarrass their children at every possible opportunity,
after all they do it to us often enough!!

I'd prefer a monaro or Mustang any day, but I agree the Mx is a good fun car
and value for money.

Mmmh, don't agree conmpletely. MX-5 is not a girly car, it is just
that what you think of it. I like cars for their driving qualities
and fun factor. In my 'career' as a MX-5 driver I had so much fun in
this car putting people in bigger cars (like Porsches) to shame.
There is so many things you can change on this car that it's just
crazy. Different suspension, Turbo's, wheels, ... a whole new world.
Even OEM this car is fun jsut because of it's road holding behaviour.
American cars being cool cars?? Errrr no thanks a lot! Well maybe the
AC Cobra, which is an English car really :-)

Hey Ken, I tend to agree it's more of a girls car unless you change
the sound with a big bore and maybe put some bigger wheels on it and
an H & K airfilter with pod. I don't know what else to say.
Imp a 45 yr old lady who loves her cars and the MX5 is just a toy car
to me. I like to drive it for a change ( My S Holden is my favorite)
and in the summer the MX is fun. But I would think a blokes car is
more like a Holden or a Ford. Perhaps you should try a Convertible
Mustang to avoid anymore sarcasm or just be thick skinned and say
no! Im going to keep my sweet little baby and stuff what they say.
Cheers! Chrissy

Well, when I was looking to replace my Honda I was seriously looking
at MGBGT - still saving for the MG TC, I have a picture of one stuck
to the top of my monitor.

I've been .. 'lusting' ? after an MG for a looonnnngggg time and now
at 34 (33 when I bought it) I have my prissy green (with tan interior,
power steering, air conditioning, electric windows, remote boot opener
and electric aerial) hairdressers car instead - but I love it.

True I can't fit all my training gear in the boot (or the front seat),
I can only take one of my students to gradings or training camps.

I've had it described as a hairdresser's car (do I look like a
friggin' hairdresser?), a chick magnet (bother, must be set to the
wrong polarity - sigh)

But when it comes down to it it is a fun car to drive, quick off the
mark, nice around corners, wind in the hair, grit in the eyes, truck
exhaust in the nose - wonderful ;-)

First they mock you ...

It's fairly obvious from the Auckland record drive at Alexandra Park and
last weekend's Christchurch Anniversary meeting that there were very few if
any hairdressers there. Or certainly the lack of hairstyling would indicate
that! Where did the term come from anyway?
I'm not at all concerned about my masculinity (too old to worry about it!)
and I'm still happily married after 28 years.
Ian, get the spare wheel out of the boot and mounted under the boot floor.
You will almost double the useable boot capacity and have more boot room
than the NB has.

How can you say Mustang and Monaro in the same breath??? Mustang good... but
Monaro, that's like buying a 1.8 BMW because you can't afford the real
thing... it's a pretend muscle car. Unless of course it the OLD Monaro, that
was cool, but the new ones... and some people say MX5's are gay.. Monaro the
try hard vehicle of the Millennium, I'm surprised they didn't make it a 4WD
diesel so they had all bases covered...

Hi there Chrissy - I don't own an auto MX5 and would never intend to so am not
familiar - in fact I do not own an MX5 at all at present. I've joined this
site only last week with a view to help me find the right MX5 among the many
superb machines I've test driven over the last two weeks. I currently own a
modified Mazda Astina runnings low 7.0's (and high 6.0's) which likes eating
Holdens for breakfast and Fords for lunch - certainly not a toy. The engine
is the same BD6 as in the early MX5 I'm after and will apply these same
modifications directly to the MX5. Hairdresser? Nope. Boiling Water
technician.

Hi! Mark, Id like to make mine faster, but would never want a turbo. Any
suggestions? The best place to get a great buy on an MX is Trademe.co.nz. I've
bought 2 on that site and got fabulous cars and buys.
The best guys to get dents out are the guys that go to your local dealers and
that's all they do. I think they're called dents plus in Auckland. I use them
and they're fab. Just call a dealer in you area. They will help.

I have just purchased a Mazda MX5 and at the same time joined the MX5 club
and I am 63 years old and certainly not a hairdresser. This is a car I have
lusted over but like a lot of people could not afford a sports car until all
the children have left home.
My wife says I am going through a old life crisis but who cares, it is
wonderful to drive, to drive is the operative word ones drives this car not
like the modern cars where it is like sitting in front of the TV doing
nothing.

Is anyone able to assist however with the stereo that came with the car but
no manual with it.

It is a Sony XRC 7300 Car stereo/CD with a 10 disc stacker. I need to reset
it but no idea how.

Hi Chrissy

Yeah, I've recently found out how much - unfortunately! (Many thanks for the
tip).

I've been told that "do it yourself" on the BD6 engine (as with other types)
is usually limited to installing a K&N air filter, running Mobil 1 lube, using
98 octane fuel and having a nice clean sports exhaust system without the cat.
You can also add some well designed exhaust headers. And with 98 octane, you
can advance the timing by several degrees. And you can modify the inlet
manifold and filter pod so as to reduce airflow resistance and make sure that
all the inlet air is coming in cold, by locating the inlet end hard up against
the front of the engine bay at a point where there is clean cold airflow from
the front. (Cold air = dense air = more oxygen available for combustion).

Beyond that, if want lower than maybe mid 8.0's (that is, 0-100k's) you have
to make other modifications that are outside the expertise of most
do-it-youselfers. This is because although almost anyone can go and install
cams that are of higher lift and longer duration, the stock ECU (computer) and
air-flow meter are no longer "in synch" with the new arrangement - nor the
valve spring ratings.

It takes particular skill and experience to provide a well synchronised high
performance set up - you need precisely the right cams, ideally a different
ECU (programmable), mods to the air flow meter, a well designed inlet manifold
- and sometimes the use of larger injectors - and don't forget the fuel pump.
It will probably need to be upsized to prevent lean-out and fatal consequences
for the engine.

One all the upgrade guff is installed, the engine must be tuned on a dyno -
with several critical readings taken and fine adjustments made - so that the
car will still idle and run as smooth as stock, but you've still got lots of
extra power mid and top. Of course you can run a set of wild cams that will
have the engine go like hell up top, but then sag in the middle and idle very
roughly - more for race than road - so the lift and duration specs are
critical. As are the valve spring ratings - valve bounce must be avoided,
especially if you want to remove the "soft cut" which limits rpm's to 7,400.

If you're not an experienced mechanic, best leave this level of development to
the experts who know what they're doing and have the gear. And preferably
have particular modification experience relative to your engine type. My
Astina was modified in Japan and I'm the first NZ owner - so I haven't any
exact idea of what's been done. With the MX5 I want I'll either have to start
from scratch or swap engines to retain the power I have.

Apart from that, I've been told that a turbo charger with intercooler is the
best and easiest way of gaining power - even with the stock cams and
compression ratio. I believe that this has been done successfully by a
do-it-yourselfer.

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who knows a bit more about a
reasonably simple bolt-on turbo arrangement for the Mazda MX5 BD6 1600 engine
and what ever else needs to be done and taken into account. (I've heard that
the MX5 engine is the same strengthened version as of the Mazda 323 hatch
4-wheel drive BD6T 1600 Turbo circa late '80's - but with lighter rods and
different compression). It's hard to get one of these 323T engines in good
nick now - mainly because of damage caused by poor maintenance and bits
ingested from turbos that blew as a result of old gummy oil seizing the
bearings.

Cheers

They don't need a law to ban them - with the price of fuel they are
being priced out of the market.

They do however have a use - we often had 8 people that we needed to
transport, thus we purchased a Land Cruiser - not many cars that we
could do this in comfort with. We did however get hassled by people who
thought we shouldn't have one (my wife came home really upset one day
from the supermarket where she was abused)

People should be free to drive what they wish - they don't take up more
space than the big V8's, nor do any more damage to the environment.
People argue that people don't drive them off road - so why but an "off
roader" - the same logic can be applied to cars - most of the population
don't take their car to a race track - so why but a car that can go over
140kph?

Sorry Chrissy - The law needs to address the people behind the wheel -
not the car that they are driving.

Ive read this twice now - I hope that it does not come across as
aggressive - its not (honest) - this is a friendly forum and full of
really helpful people - I am sure you will enjoy it here.

I cant stand big 4 wheel drives and they did a case study on the type of
people who drive them. Very interesting it was. Bully is a good phrase
that comes to mind. I'm very frightened of them. We've promised
ourselves well never own one and I hope they bring in a new law to ban
the big ones. They aren't necessary to drive around the city.

Al's Mufflers in Wairau park cut mine out and replaced it with a resonator/muffler. It makes a noticable difference to pick up...and to fumes. Sometimes it's a bit smelly, but never unbearable. You won't be able to put it back if legislation changes tho. I've passed 2 WOFs since then too.

Jeff,

Should have made myself clearer, what I want to do is to get rid of the
flashing green lights on the display window and either have the radio
station frequency showing or the clock showing.

It has a shift on and off button but do not know what that does.
