Put the roof up, its RAINNING....YEAH RIGHT

Post by karlncas » Thu Oct 20, 2005 5:04 pm

Hi all, while passing through Levin today I saw a Blue with white stripes
MX5 ( with a boot rack ) heading south, IN THE RAIN, WITH THE ROOF DOWN!!!

And I just wanted to say THAT MAN DESERVES A DB.

You can very easily drive in the rain with the top down. It all depends
on your speed and intensity of the rain. Of course stop signs and
traffic lights DO pose a bit of a 'damp' problem :-)

True, the rain is no problem. The first time it hits you it's a nice
surprise that you don't get wet and the next time it's just fun, even
if other drivers think you're a nut. A traffic light does give you time
to put the roof up, though.

Just keep the speed to 70miles and you're safe :-)

The first time I took my car out with the hard top off. I thought it
may have been a wee bit dodgey on my way home - a bit of light
spitting. But just after I past the Newlands overbridge (SH1,
Wellington) it started hosing down.

So rather than stop and spend 10 minutes or so working out how to put
the top up, I rush home <> 7 minutes away in J'ville.

I was really suprised how little wetness was in the car, I assume
mainly from the idiot doing a slow 55k in a 50k zone in front of me
:-)

Ok just wanting a little feedback on this since it seems everyone has a
different opinion,
Should I buy a Haynes or are the Enthusiast (wierd) manuals better?
I mean sure Haynes dont tell you about every tiny little thing but how much
better can some English mechanic really write this stuff?
Anyway just some views on what to buy would be great.

Thanks Euen.

What I ended up doing was using the sleeve that was in the housing and
reused the original bolt using the sleeve as a spacer. Seems to work
fine (here's hoping)

Btw - What I didn't cover in the original email was the absolute need to
change the camber (I went with 4 because the aligner couldn't get down
to 3.5) and the toe in (to zero) - it makes a huge difference. This
lightens the steering up considerable, whilst still feeling firmer than
power steering and leaving in all the feel that is gained.

Off for some serious playing this weekend.

Chris - shouldn't that be 4 degrees of caster ?

(in case anyone else tries to get a funky alignment this weekend! ;-)

hmm, following up from this.

I phoned AA Insurance and had a bit of a moan, managed to convince
them that that car was worth $9000 (after it is a '91 VSpec, BRG,
leather interior and hardtop) - and the insurance is now $0.02 less
that when it was insured at $8300.

So when it comes around to insuring next year I will be phoning up and
having a wee moan about it again.

Enjoy.
