wont idle

Post by tim.maggie » Tue Oct 18, 2005 8:48 am

Hi all, a friend also with a 1600 NA mx5 is having trouble with his idling -
in fact the it wont! The idling adjustment has been wound all the way out but
it makes no difference. He has been told that there is some sort of valve
somewhere that is carboned up and needs cleaning. Have any of you heard of
this and what it might be? Or have any other ideas on what the problem could
be? Tim

Hi Jeff, yes it needs to have a foot kept on the accelorator to keep it
running.

When adjusting idle, did they do the required jumpering on the ECU
connector (in the engine bay)? I believe you have to connect TEN & Gnd
to tell the ECU the new idle setting - as per adjusting timing. Someone
please correct me if wrong.

cheers

Correct, the connector jumper is required. However it may well be that the
air bypass in the throttle body is blocked and the T/B needs cleaning. There
is a procedure for doing this in the Miata.net garage forum. Note the
warnings carefully as to the cleaners NOT to use. The procedure for the idle
setting is also there. Look under "Idle Droop"
I found the butterfly stop set wrong on my 98NB 1600 and so the throttle was
sticking shut.
I reset the stop to just above catching.

Take a look at the AFM plug, make sure it's not loose, or full of gunk /
corroded

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

BTW - the fuel pimp doesn't run without the AFM signal - so I've
discovered...

A fuel pimp? Fuel's not THAT expensive.

when you see those cars "kerb-crawling" through the red light district
... there's your fuel pimp right there ;-)

Air Flow Meter is an AFM and sits to the left front of the engine (Left being
passenger side) and measures how much air goes into the engine so the computer
knows how petrol to give to the engine.
