Just something to think about.

How often do you actually see an MX5 on the road?

Actually, pretty damned often, I was driving alongside Pip in her "REDTOP" on
the way home tonight, (you didn't wave back Pip, I was in the green BMW, so
you are excused) and I passed several others along the way.

But there have only ever been 720,000 of them in the world, and there would, I
guess, be quite a few less now, after 16 years of prangs, and general wearing
out.

It makes you realise what a big number 3/4 million is, that in a little
country like NZ there are so many of them.

(A philosophical)

a more interesting number is how many drivers wave back at you - about 1 in 10 in my experience, so I'm often amazed at the number of MX5s out there, who obviously aren't in the club...

if you don't feel like waving, but end up next to a strange MX5 in the traffic, try this...

look over, and shout "nice car!!!" you'll always get a laugh...

No, it's not camp. MG drivers, Triumph Owners (they don't get to drive their cars very often :0) beetle drivers and members of various car clubs all around the world like to acknowledge that other owners have similar (good) taste in cars. I'm sure no-one would call a TVR owner camp, but I'm sure they must wave too (would someone like to contradict me now I've got myself out on this limb :0)

Wave on, I say...count the number of blank looks you get, and be pleasantly surprised when you get a return. A quick flip of your headlights (where safe and appropriate, and for those of us lucky enough to have pop ups) works wonders too.

cheers

(a vigourously waving) Graeme H

I'm not 'in da club' and sadly neither my wife nor I wave any longer. I am
fed up with waving to passing MX5's to get no response at all. It is
embarrasing! Back home - in the UK - if you have a car with any sort of
following, you wave. In fact, it is common knowledge the only car make you
will NEVER get a wave from is BMW.

The MX5 is a 'cool' car and waving an acknowledgment of its coolness only adds
to its general coolability.

Please wave back at us - my wife is a babe driving with the lid down - any
guys who don't wave back at her must be camp!

Come South!
When you all come down for the Labour Weekend Rally in conjunction with the
Christchurch Club (you are coming I assume!) then you will find that we are
a friendly lot and do wave.
Don't give up, keep waving!

By the sounds of her I would wave at your wife whatever she was driving.

As for the wave debate in the U.K. I can tell you that the 'do you wave'
forums are thick with conflict.

BMW owners do not wave but 'BMW Mini' owners are going through the same
process as on here.

What we seem to end with is the 'half hearted wave', a kind of 'hope you
wave back' wave which of course doesn't encourage a response anyway.

The alternative is the full on 'I am a nutter enthusiast' wave which can
illicit as few responses as the 'half hearted' one.

What to do?

Which reminds me of a comment that I read on the subject of whether or not to
buy a BMW (specifically a 3 series but who knows how far the truth may
extend):

If you were looking to pull out from a side road into a line of traffic,
and you were driving BMW, would they let you in?

Another dilemma may be that if your wife, partner, friend, is a babe, then
they could mis-interpret your waving intentions.

Oh the agony of living in a modern world.

I installed the "flash to pass" diode mod so that I could flip my
NA's headlights up momentarily in a "wave"... but sadly I get less
than the proverbial 1-in-10 response.

Before I got my MX5 and got hooked on 4 wheels, I rode a Gold Wing
motorcycle all around NZ... on the open road most motorcyclists wave
to each other. There's a camaraderie there which I am sad to say
doesn't seem to be there on 4 wheels.

Like the staid British BMW drivers, Harley riders are the only ones
who notoriously refuse to return a friendly wave... but, to be fair,
it is widely assumed that their Harleys vibrate and wobble so
furiously that their riders really have to hold on for dear life with
both hands... so we forgive them.
