blinkin' headlight

Post by tim.maggie » Sat Sep 10, 2005 6:13 pm

Hi all, turned off the headlights last night - both lights went down ok - but
one kept on going - up and down without stopping. Looked hilarious.

I guess that there is some sort of positioning switch that has stuck? Any
clues on how to repair would be appreciated.

Tim.

Hey Eric, winkin' at me ah? Well I do have great legs but I would have
thought that it would be wolf whistling and winking at wheels or a shapely
bonnet on another car!

Hello out there -not a lot of replies on this one. Blinkin - winkin
headlights never happen to anyone else? T

At least you have one working correctly. I would suggest you are probably
right and either the position switch has failed or the relay contacts have
failed. All you can do is to compare the wiring and switches between the two
sides to find out what has happened.
Perhaps someone in the Miata.net forum may be able to shed some light on the
problem. Be prepared for some smart replys though.
There may well be someone near you can assist, so where are you??

There are answers to this problem on the www.miatanet.com site. Look in the 'garage section' and on the forum. You'll have to register to do a forum search, but it may help.
Here are a few snippets...

"As Bill mentioned, check the ground under the brake booster. That will cause the wierd headlight syndrome."

Either the switches (light stalk or center console) are giving some kind of intermittent contact due to all of the moisture - doubt it, or the retractor relay is on the fritz. Dry out the switches and if the problem is still there, pull the retractor relay.

"The retractor relay is responsible for raising and lowereing of the lights. Pull it and the lights will default to the up position.
93 wiring diagram ... http://www.madracki.com/miata/images/wiring/93diag.pdf ...of this pdf.
Zoom in and you will see the gizmo called a retractor relay. That device is likely your problem. Tap it on the side while the battery is connected if the lights are dancing up and down, if they don't stop dancing pull it."

Let us all know how you get on.

cheers

Thanks for the tips Kev, yep will check out the Miata list. Am about 25k
outside Chch. If you could control it this would be a hoot of a mode to
do - looks a real dag when happening. Tim.

I use the Madracki diagrams also. They are not exactly right as they are for
the US market MX5's, but are a good start. Pity they don't extend beyond
2000 though.
One thing I was looking for was the connection for the dimmer. I havn't
found it on my 98NB6C import, so i gave up and built a dimmer and wired it
up directly to the instrument panel. I have also installed a low fuel
warning LED.

Thanks Graeme for the info. You obviously know your stuff - can you think
of a relatively easy way to do a modification so that one could do this
while on the move (eg when you wanted to - rather than the uncontrolled
situation I have at the moment)? To be able to 'blink' a single headlight
at another passing mx5 could be quite a laugh. Tim.
