My MX5 won't go, ECU?

Post by Grant » Thu Sep 01, 2005 7:04 pm

Some time ago I mentioned the problem created by having no front tow hooks
when my 1998 NB 1.8 failed to proceed. After some time at the doctors, a
fuel pump relay was diagnosed as the cause of the non running engine. Meant
I had to go to the monthly club outing in the Honda Odyssey (with an MX5
club sticker on the windscreen!). The relay was duly replaced and the car
then driven home (only 4km). Two days later The car refused to start again.
Same symptoms, no fuel. Called the mechanics and they came to tow it away
again. In the meantime I had replaced the tow hooks.
Now after three weeks and some very frustrated mechanics / auto electricians
it still does not go!! The Mazda dealer used their diagnostic equipment to
interrogate the ECU. No error codes and all appears correct. Obviously not
as the engine won't go. No fuel as no power to the fuel pump as no relay
control signals from the ECU. All sensors have been checked and confirmed
working. Coil pack replaced , no better.
The ECU has been sent to Christchurch for testing so hope to hear tomorrow
what the outcome is. I'm suffering severe withdrawal symptoms.
Anyone had a similar problem? Looks like I'm possibly in for a replacement
ECU. Anyone got one out there somewhere? I haven't tried Ross yet but
thought someone might just have one stashed away in their shed after doing
some performance upgrades maybe.
The way things are proceeding it'll be the Honda for next weekend club
outing again. Might have to get my 1992 NA back from my daughter who has it
on long term loan in Nelson.

Grant in sunny Blenheim and no MX5 to drive :(

Sorry for the temporary loss in your family.
There have been a couple for sale on trade me lately but both have been sold

I remember that auction and thought about buying it at the time. But who
needs a spare ECU!?

Shot in the dark: the NA cuts off the fuel pump if it's getting no signal
from the airflow meter. A small vacuum leak in the intake piping will do
it. Don't know if the NB does the same...

Thanks for the offer, Euen. I'll get back to you if I need to try yours. I
should know on Friday if mine is faulty or not. Not sure what the part
number on mine is so will check that out as well.
And to think the one on Trademe went for $1.00 at the beginning of August!
Didn't see it at the time though and mine was working then.
