ever locked your keys in??

Post by Robyn and Rich » Sun Aug 07, 2005 4:12 pm

Not sure wether to believe this or not...

got this email from a friend when she heard that I had locked my
keys...(no. not the mx)

"Another way to Unlock Your Car" - AMAZING - but it works.

One can't believe it, but this works -- who'd a "thunk" it?

Have you locked the keys in the car?

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home, call

someone at home on your cell phone and ask them to get your car keys.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the

other person at home press the unlock button on your keys while

holding it near the phone on their end. Your car will unlock. It will

save someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no

object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach

someone who has the "remote" for your car, you will be able to unlock

the doors (or the trunk this way!)

Editor's Note* It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our

car over a cell phone each time we tried it. Have a nice day!

Sounded like an urban myth to me (38 years electronics experience).
So, to confirm this, I used Google and found this within a few seconds:

So OK, why however does the remote work at much longer range when you hold
it against your head?

I saw this on Top Gear, with Clarkson and his Merc, and I thought he was
having us on, but it works! The BMW remote woks a lot better if I stick it
against my head.

My best guess it that it improves the ground plane

What do you think Grant?

Been going to try my alarm remote as well but haven't got around to it yet.
I would guess that as the frequency of the remote is probably around 300 or
433MHz and the antenna will be printed on the internal circuit board, then
holding it against the head could help improve the radiation pattern. Maybe
the skull cavity forms a resonant cavity at these frequencies! Would be
interesting to do some measurements on a spectrum analyser. Might have to
get mine out and see what it does.
Any markings on the BMW remote to indicate what frequency it is on?
There is another explanation I just thought of. When using the remote you
normally hold it at a comfortable height which will be a lot lower than when
holding it at head height. Might just be that the path is clearer from
remote to in car receiver at that higher level. Also when holding the remote
normally it could be shielded by your body or even by your hand. When
holding it against your head, it won't be shielded as much and will more
than likely be on the car side of your body so you can see the results as
well.

Eric, if you weren't such a nice bloke this would be a great opportunity for
some comments about how your skull works.

Cheers

No freq, but I might see if I can read it on the freq analyser at work
tomorrow.

I never thought of my nut as a cavity filter, mind you my ears look a bit
like Sky dishes!

Well it didn't work any better for me but they tell me radio and other
signals travel better and further in a vacuum. May be that explains how
yours works better.

Mmmmmm food for thought Ah...
