Adjusting Pop-up lights

Post by R LTD » Mon Jul 25, 2005 5:58 pm

Hi
I would appreciate any advice on adjusting the pop-up lights sothat they sit
flush with the bonnet when shut. They currently sit below the bonnet line and
need to move away from the front rubber strip.

Thanks

Adjusting Pop-up lights

Post by KSCRIM » Mon Jul 25, 2005 6:22 pm

Step 1, make sure that the bonnet is sitting in the right place, ie flush
with the guards and nose.
Step 2, raise the lights and remove the plastic surrounds, 2 screws on each
side of each cover.
Step 3, there are 4 small bolts with cross point screwdriver slots in them,
which hold the top cover to the light frame. When slackened off, the cover
can be raised or lowered to match the bonnet and the guards. You may well
find that the cover is slightly bent and that is what is producing the
misalignment, be careful in straightening the covers so you DONT crease the
covers.
After getting the covers to match the bonnet, refit the plastic surrounds
and admire!!
You will have to constantly raise and lower the lights to check as you go,
take your time and adjust slowly.
I have recently straightened my sisters yellow 91.

Id just like to add a step in the below process...
Step 3.5 is... soak the adjusting screws with WD40/crc
overnight as they seem to be stuck on with the paint
and they are very soft... Make sure you use a near new
good condition screwdriver as the screws are VERY VERY
VERY easily stripped out in the phillips hex. I had to
drill the heads off mine then replaced them with
stainless steel screws and washers.

Adjusting Pop-up lights

Post by peter » Mon Jul 25, 2005 8:01 pm

Hello Tony.
I did this about six years ago, there's a stopper that needs adjusting so
the light is flush with the body :

1. raise the lights
2. disconnect the battery
3. There's an arm going from the headlight to the retractor motor,
disconnect this on the motor.
4/ push the light down until it hits the stopper : if it's in the wrong
place lift the lift up and tweak the stopper, keepdoing this until the light
ends up in the right place.
5/ do this with the other light
6/ replace the arms
7/ recoonect the battery, try the lights.

or you could wait until the technical day on Sunday (if you're in Auckland)

Adjusting those stoppers must be done very
carefully...
They must be adjusted so that the buckets only just
touch them in the up/down positions, its a bit like a
piston reaching top dead center, if you wind the
stopper down too far, the "piston" will hit it too
early and bind up. If you crank them out too much
youll bind up the actuators and wear them out
prematurely, they really only need to be adjusted if
youre lights wobble when in the raised position, i
wouldnt mess with them in the down position unless the
bucket is REALLY going down too far.

Adjusting Pop-up lights

Hi,

The only things I'd add would be

1) It's easier to shift the covers up so that they sit slightly proud of
the bonnet line, then tap down to suit.

2) You may have trouble loosening the screws, depending on the age &
condition of the car. Mine were frozen solid & I ended up drilling them
out. Replacement 5mm (I think) metric thread screws will do the trick.
Raid Mitre 10 or other hardware place.

3) Be very careful to avoid creasing or distorting the covers - they are
not very stiff

4) Repeat step 3 ...

5) Repeat step 4 ...

Greg

The bolts on my sisters 91 were actually hex head screws. A small spanner
got them free ok. The replacement with stainless steel is a good idea. The
screws for the plastic shroud are also soft, use caution. The best
screwdriver to use is the reversible one that comes in the tool kit bag with
the wheel brace for Japanese cars, the cross point is neither Phillips or
Posidrive.

Adjusting Pop-up lights

Post by black93 » Mon Jul 25, 2005 10:20 pm

Hi
I have just adjusted my headlamps to stop vibrations. Three of the
rubber caps were missing of the adjuster bolts. Mazda were unable to
supply any so I used some 10mm rubber chair leg ends from Miter 10. Cut
down these did the job. I adjusted them with the lights up to a firm fit
and then used a locknut to secure them. With the lights down I did the
same with the oter set of adjusters. I belive that both sets need
adjusting to stop movement in the lights and long term damage. The
lights are now steady whilst driving.
