Driving lights

Post by Mikkels » Sat Jul 16, 2005 9:39 pm

Hi

I bought some stock driving lights on Trade Me and have
mounted them OK but I cannot locate the wiring that is meant
to be there. Where the *&^(($ is it and what colour code?
Also I need the dash switch. Any idea where I can get one
or what I could use instead?

Cheers

Hi Don

I thought the standard wiring was only for fog lights. The diagram I have
shows the colour as green/yellow and the switch feed is taken off the lo
beam side of the head-lights. (The diagram is from the US but so far
matches the wiring on the 96 jap import I have been "working on")

Diagrams are here http://www.madracki.com/miata/wiring.html

Earlier Mazda 323 switches will fit if you can get one from a wreckers.

Thanks zorruno

I presume it is just a simple rocker switch. Anybody got a
link to a pic of the original?

Hi Euen

These are yllow lights so I guess are fog lights. I want to
use them as running lights to help with visibility on the
road.

Thanks for the diagrams. I understood the wiring was right
where the lights attached but I can't locate anything.

Cheers

Hi Euen, if your car has the wiring in place(not all have) there will be a
small plastic connector inside the engine bay on the drivers side by the
suspension strut. As the lights are yellow they are fog lights and should
have acomplete wiring loom attached which includes the relay that is
required. This loom is them pluged into the connector as mentioned above.
I am off to Hamilton now but will try and find a photo for you of the
connections and where the relay goes when I get back.

Cheers Nigel

Hi, Don

I've done much as you're doing but with miniature driving lights from
Supercheap. I've got a 1990 V Special & the loom for the (optional) fog
lights was just tucked up in between the radiator & the nose piece. I went
to a Mazda wrecker & found a male plug & loom to match, then connected the
lights to the new ex-wrecker loom.

I see that Nigel has just replied - the original loom is connected as
described. The original switch is mounted on the left end of the small
panel behind the ignition next to the dash light rheostat.

Could take pics but would have to take off one of Ross' radiator shrouds
which is obscuring (covering up !) the wiring ... let me know how you get
on.

Greg

Hi Greg

Thanks heaps for the photo and your advice. I'm off out now
but when I get back I'll have a look to see what I can find.

Do your fog lights turn off when you turn off the ignition?

Don

Hi, Don

Nope - lights operate regardless of ignition.

The driving lights only come on if the parkers are on (or headlights too
obviously). This is how fog lights (which is what the original wiring is
for) are supposed to work.

I'm not sure of the regs here but in Oz that's a legal requirement. City
Garage checked that out when I was getting it WOFed, so may be the same
here.

So if you can find the original wiring that'll save you heaps of effort, as
I was able to just plug in & operate as required.

Regards,
Greg

Many thanks David. I now know what to look for but am still
looking for the wiring for under the bonnet. I have
found a white connector near the shoch tower on the drivers
side with nothing coming out of it. It looks like two wires
with the connectors at 90 degrees to one another. I think
Nigel was going to get me a photo of that part of the
harness and the location of the relay.

Cheers

Don; Thats the plug for the foglights. The relay mounts on the rh headlight and comes with the wiring from that plug to the lights.Ross.
