Original Stereo wanted for 1991 roadster
Original Stereo wanted for 1991 roadster
Evening People.
Unfortunately the original stereo I got from Mike Jolley is not working
(sorry Mike, but thanks heaps anyway!!), after hunting around for, and
purchasing the plugs I am really keen to put the original stereo back
into the car.
Does anyone have a working one, or know where I can get one repaired???
I think that even if I can get a couple of non working ones then maybe I
can get a new one built (this is DEFINITELY A LAST RESORT!!!)
I have the stereo that I got from Gazza in there at present, but it
doesn't fit well.
Many Thanks

Got an original tape deck (Alpine) from a 92 NZ new to give away to
a good home. Just the deck tho. If you want it, you're welcome. It
went well before I replaced it with a CD unit

I was a witness to that (the Ken part not the Hotwire part). It just kept
spitting out the CD after a few seconds, otherwise radio (except it was
Japanese band) seemed fine.
By the way Mike, how is the hand coming along all working again I hope.
Cheers

No worries Mike, many thanks for the unit, it was greatly appreciated. I
am planning on having it looked at if I can't get another one.

My father used to have an expression for situations such as this:
"beggars can't be choosy" --- and I might add, shouldn't whine!
Almost any electrical repair shop will know somebody who repairs car
stereos, cd players, etc.
If for whatever reason you insist on having 15 year old technology in
your MX5, then go pay the market price for it!

The radio for a 1990 NZ model MX5 was a Panasonic radio/tape deck, with no CD
player.
There was a problem with these early units. When the humidity got high, the
radio or tape wouldn't work until it dried out. Are you really sure you want
old technology that may be unreliable when a new unit can be easily fitted and
you can still buy, new, 2 different size storage bins for under the radio,
from your Mazda/Ford dealer.

HI Ian.
The original stereo for the 1991 roadster did have the cd/tape/radio
from what I can understand.
The plan is (at this point) to replace my stereo with the original one.
I do have the smaller of the storage bins but may have to get rid of
that and buy the larger if I decide to keep the modern unit that I have
in there currently.
The thing that sparked our interest was the cars that we saw with the
original unit in, I thought they looked great.
I might just have to take the car into a car audio outlet!!

I can understand wanting the original look. Friends of ours have an old
Beetle and they kept the original ivory coloured radio for originality
and looks and fitted a new CD in the glove box for a nice look and nice
sound. Could be a bit of a pain altering volume when driving on your
own with it in the glove box, though.
We replaced our original radio/tape with a CD but I have kept the
original 'just in case I want to put it back in for the original look in
the future' - for once Susan supports this hoarding!

Billy boy!!
I was wondering how long it would be before you reared your head again.
Firstly may I say how wonderful it is of your rest home staff to allow
you to access the computer so early in the morning. When I worked in
one we didn't allow the patients to access it until at least 9!!
Not that I have to justify myself to you, but to make it easier for you
to understand, I did in fact, offer to purchase the stereo from Mike.
He declined. If you read back through my past emails on here then you
will see that I very very grateful to him for the stereo.
The reason I asked on here if anyone knew where to get one repaired is
not for a free ride, Billy boy, but incase anyone had had theirs
repaired in the past. I would have thought someone such as you
(www.kase.co.nz <http://www.kase.co.nz/> ) would know all about
networking..
I am very keen to return my car (I have said this so many times now!!)
to its original condition, so that is why I want 15 year old technology
in it!!
And besides. the 90's were great!!!
Oh, and before you jump down my throat again, my father had a saying
too. it went something like this. if you can't say anything nice, don't
say anything at all!!
Warmest regards
Ken McNoe

I had one of those stereos in my first MX5.
It was about 5 years old at the time, and the stereo was useless. Very
flakey, would keep ejecting disks, skipped a lot. They do work better
when the car is warm (!), but not by much.
Get one if you want to keep the car looking original, but I'd get
something newer if you just want to listen to music.
Thomas.

Regrads NigelHi ken, I recently sold a 1997 that had the original unit in it which even played copied CD's. I know the new owners have replaced it with a new Unit so will ask them what they did with the old one.

Hi Ken,
I still have my original radio/tape player, which was the original 1990 fit
out, complete with correct pocket, it's still free and certainly, when it
was taken out, it still worked.
While my CEO, "SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED" prefers sound quality over
originality, so we have a modern CD in the car, I personally, am with you on
keeping things looking original.
Drop me an email ericwest@internet.co.nz if you want it
Regards
