Nah! Its not for me. It looks like a BMW ( though without all the freaky
creases and curves they overdesigned into them)

Damn that car is FUGLY FUGLY FUGLY.
much too round and high in the front, people are going
to have a hell of a time making that look cool and
aggressive.
THEYVE BUBBLEGUMED THE MX5!!
That is waaaay too girly and hairdresser styling for
me, iwould have preferred a more RX-8 approach to
styling the front end. Back end is ok though.
It looks like theyve gone for the Z3 type of
market...
Will that be a mistake considering the mass appeal and
target market of the last 16 years???
only time will tell...

Just called my friendly Mazda dealer... they know no more than we do
about the NC... They have had to official communication from Mazda and
they don't expect to have any until September or October. With the
European release is scheduled for August, the first ones we see on the
road may be "used" imports!

They also don't know if they are going to be getting both variants, ie,
1.8 and 2.0 litre engines.

Yes... well... okay, inescapably it IS different, a significant
departure in character.

Bigger (a bit) and definitely more bulbous/rounder. Even so, its
origins are obvious and it is a sort of logical evolution influenced by
recent trends.

It may be a shame, though not surprising, that Mazda don't simply
improve and refine just those particular qualities that we fell in love
with with our first MX.

And it seems sadly inevitable that the evolution of great little cars
always tends to the bigger... gads, remember the original Thunderbird!
(Let's not go there... please!)

But cars and kids inexorably grow up, and not always exactly as we want
them to.

I may even grow to like the NC (I'm reserving judgment), but in the
meantime it just makes my NA more precious, more a "classic", and
whatever they do to the marque, it will not detract from my enjoyment
of my MX... top down... wheeeeee!

Id have to agree Glenn. Those flares at the front look like add ons and are
all wrong, and the headlights are to small. It has hints of RX8 in the body
flares although the sill extension makes it look like a Z4 BMW copy.Ugly
steering wheel with radio controls!.Styley wheels ,mirrors and
stylebar/windblocker though.Paddleshift gearchange, auto or a 6 spd,what a
choice. It seems to be going away from the original of a light weight simple
sports car. Ross.

Anyone know the release date in NZ? i.e. when you'll be able to test drive
one...

I don't but based on seeing a 94 Honda S2000 recently, I'm interested.
Candidly, I suspect Mazda copied Honda's S2000 to create the NC, and I'm
curious to see if this is in fact the case.

Hi Terry, Glen Harris (Product Mgr at Mazda) gave us an update at the AGM.
Late Sep is expected launch date and it is his intention to involve as many
club members as possable in the launch which will include having cars
available for club runs. The official dealer launch is to be in
Christchurch.
As we get more info we will keep everyone informed. - Watch this space as
the saying goes.

Why would the makers of the most successful sports car want to copy another
maker???
If Mazda has copied the S2000 and still managed to keep the price $20,000
cheaper, good on them.
In a lot of ways (take away the flared guards) the NC is similar to the NA.
The nose with the small headlights is very much like the NA when the lights
are down.
Can't wait to see it in the flesh.

Answer to your question: Because it will sell more cars! :)

Agree with your less by $20,000 view but I don't believe the price
differential is that large -- perhaps I'm wrong

Won't comment on your NC like NA until I see it ... but will hold on to
my NA until I do :)

I don't know whether this is good or not, but Jeremy Clarkson and his
colleagues on Top Gear all agreed the NC MX5 is a very good looking car.
Will be interesting to see what they think when they finally test one. I see
there will be a test drive report in one of the local motoring magazines due
next month.
I'll be holding onto mine as well, probably because there is no way I could
afford a new one anyway!

Hi Bill, expected price of NC is around $45k and s2000 are close to $70k new.
Like you, I will stay with what I have for now as I can pull it to bits, and add pieces and not worry about the $45k that is invested.

Having seen the NC "in the flesh" it's a s exy car!

I'm getting sick of people trying to label it an S2000 clone just
because it's got the same size engine.

It's got elements of both previous MX-5 shapes and some of it's own.

There are bits you'll love and bits you'll hate, but I guarantee if you
had to pick between the NA and NB and the NC you'll pick the NC!

My 2 cents.

- Dave.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

This may be sacrilege, lese-majeste or something equally nasty, but I have
never really been able to see $45k of value in a new MX5 and even less able
to see $70K in an S2000 or an MGTF, (funnily enough, $355K for a DB9 Volante
doesn't phase me, but I'm never likely to have to pay it).

However, if Mazda have managed to get the 2 litre NC to perform anything
like an S2000 does on it's 2 litres, then I could change my mind.
Over-priced they may be, but the S2000 is an awesome car, similar
performance for $20K less would almost be a bargain!

unless there is a different honda 2000 model that I am unaware of (newer
one maybe? Would that be an S2005?!)... this
http://www.herzogmotorsport.com/autosho ... .S2000.jpg
looks nothing like this
http://www.dreamcity.jp/life/images_uni ... x5-002.jpg

feel free to flick from browser page to page for a better A-B comparison.

Looks?: The NC looks a lot more like the NA/NB than a S2000. NC has
familiar bonnet bulge, balanced rounded shape, smiling intake, shorter &
more rounded nose. NC has flared arches though which is a new feature.
Chassis?: Mazda have been developing it for years. per RX-8 and Mazda3
Engine?: Totally different
Colour?: Ok they are almost identical ;)

There's a possibility of me being in NZ in Jul/Aug, so I was hoping... We
don't get the NC until Nov :-( Looks like a stopover in the US in in
order... :-)

Does anyone take Clarkson seriously :-)

There's a positive writeup in this weeks UK Autocar and Werner has posted a

<http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=140224> again very positive. The
looks are growing on me :-)
