Aluminium Flywheel

Post by Mikkels » Sat Jun 18, 2005 8:32 pm

I am looking to buy an aluminium flywheel. Does anybody
know of a source in NZ for a 1.8? I'm going to the states
in July so will try and get one shipped to my hotel while
there if I cannot source one locally.

The most popular aluminium flywheel is The "Fidenza"
wheel i THink it may have a steel insert on the clutch
face but dont qoute me. Mate it to the RPs sport
clutch and you're away!!
Ill be getting the RPS MAX for the turbo when funds
permit.

how light do you want your flywheel?
I should be able to get you a billet steel item made. This is what we use
for our rotaries, 12-13lbs cost is $375incl and you get your ring gear
pressed onto this, can be made lighter or have ring gear machined as part of
the flywheel if required (extra $125).
If you are close enough when in the US to a source for the findaza unit (so
freight doest add too much) I would spend the extra and get one of them, hey
have a very good rep in the US.

There's a place in Albany that does them (chromoly?), I forget the
name, but Glenn at Rotary Power will be able to point you in the right
direction.

FWIW, it seems to be of little effect on my 1.8 (turbo).

I've had another mate;s flywheel shatter on him. No harm done, other
than having to redo the clutch/flywheel. He was having problems with
the starter / ring gears before this anyway, so it was likely a shonky
one :P

If you're staying normally aspirated, maybe a 1.6 sized one would be
better for the smaller diameter/inertia ..?

Yep the Fidanza seems like the one. Anybody ever used one
here? I'll use the standard 1.8 clutch even though I feel a
Supercharger in my future or FI of some kind.

Hi Jeff

As I'm looking at the Chromoly option (Glenn still hasn't been able to pin
down the guy who machines them) your comment about shattering flywheels has
raised a bit of concern. Was it a Chromoly one that shattered or a
lightened cast one.

Cheers
Euen

I'll ask him next time I see him ... main point was that it seemed to
be a poorly made one, hence the problems with the ring gears when
trying to start the car. :P

My one has been fine tho..

I want to measure the performance (acceleration) of my MX5
before and after the installation of the flywheel.

Any ideas? It would be good to document the difference
which says in folklore about 0.5 sec 0 - 100.

How should I do this?

Borrow a Gtech or the Apex I equivalent.

(There's no shortage of Gtech's for sale on ebay)

- Dave.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Test the car before,...and after on a Dynamo meter for BHP and KW and
see if you have gained any horses ...make notes RPM and gears etc ...
this was a part of my job (years ago ) after LPG/CNG conversions and high
performance cars ... (lost part of my hearing in one ear through this
shitty job )
