Tyres

Post by Jon Addison » Sat Jun 18, 2005 1:39 pm

I have a 1990 NZ MX-5 which is still on the original Bridgestone SF325
type tyres. They are just about slicks, so I need a new set of rubber.
The can doesn't have power steering. Does anyone have good advice about
currently available tyres that will not make the steering heavier?

hi Jon

Generally speaking to keep a soft steering feel you'll want a tyre
with soft sidewalls, and a fairly low castor number for your alignment
(under 3.5 degrees).

Apart from full-on race tyres, it's pretty difficult to find tyres
with stiff sidewalls these days!

cheers,
Jeff

Hi there,,

We have just purchased our first MX5... a little pearler.. original
89 model.. manual...

We have just put Dunlop DZ101 tyres... 205/50/15.. and running them at
about 30 psi.,

Heaps better than the mismatched Jap. tyres that were on it when we bought
it. Its only a little noisy,,, but goes round corners like its on rails.
Have had MG's etc in the past, and there is no comparison.

Am in the process of joining mx5 club,,, so am looking forward to some
interesting events.

i have toyo FM9R race tyres.
i run them at 28psi
they look wierd - and are VERY noisy at high speed (due to the
symmetrical pattern) , but the grip is absolutely astounding. they wear
quick too, but once you've had them - it's hard to go back to road tyres.
hee hee!

I use Dunlop Formula R's again a road legal race tyre and G11's. The Dunlops
are way better but again noisier on the road and not as long wearing. I
agree once you've had them road tyres are very ordinary.
cheers,

Mark
