Noisy Gearbox

Post by Roy & Sue Cunningham » Tue Jun 14, 2005 8:10 pm

Hi MX5r's,
I am seeking advice.
We have a 1989 MX5 with 46000 on the clock.
When driving along the gear box makes a rather noisy growl.
But if I hold the gear lever the noise disappears or even by just resting my
hand on the top of the gear lever.
Any ideas?

Have you checked to see that the rubber gasket (around the gear shift, but
below the leather gator) is intact. My car was like this, changed it and what
a great improvement. Ross from MX5 Mart sells these at a good price and they
are easy to replace. I would give you the link but the site seems to be off
line, in memory they were about $125 for the upper and lower seals, also keeps
dirt out of your gearbox, it's a common problem.

Noisy Gearbox

Hi, Roy,

When I first bought mine, it was making a very nasty noise, from the gearbox area, that was painful to my teeth. It disappeared in the same way, if I put my hand on the gear lever. The reason was that the gear knob was a bit loose! If I took the knob off, the noise went. I just fixed the knob, and all okay since then.

Heres a few links to some "big red button" installs.
one uses a honda button and the other uses a cutler
hammer industrial push button, if i was going to use a
honda one Id search the Net for a cheap Honda place in
the states and get it shipped out.probably much
cheaper than honda NZ.Generally they go in plce of the
cigarette lighter but...
You can also modify the hazard light button by
removing the bit which locks the button in when
pushed. Have that control a relay which is hooked in
parallel to the start on the ignition barrel

another related link with relays

Don think itd have to be cert'd you just need a bit of
electrical know how...
hope this helps.
