Crank nose problem on the B6 Engine

Post by Mikkels » Sun Jun 12, 2005 6:56 pm

Hi List

My son has a Mazda Familia with the B6 engine but FWD. It
started losing power (always was gut less) then died
completely. I tried to check the cam timing but hey have
different alignment marks to the MX5. Looked at the
distributoe and found the rotor was pointing about 45
degrees out when it should have been pointing at number one
(engine sitting on the timing mark.

I pulled the covers off and belts and guess what? The crank
bolt was finger tight and in behind was all rust dust. The
key was worn down to a sliver and the crank nose looked very
sad. So now I have a decision to make. Should I
a. try the loctite fix? Any body got long term experience?
b. Tow the car to Taylors and get them to weld and grind
$800
c. Find a good second hand engine and install?

Anybody got the details of Cam alignment marks on an old B6?
It looks to me like you just align the cams with marks at
the top.

Id replace all the stuff that goes "behind" the crank
pulley (seals etc)then loctite fix the nose, lets face
it 323's arent exactly worth spending lots
on,especially when itll probably rust out before the
loctite fix needs redoing!!!

Crank nose problem on the B6 Engine

Hi Don,

I would replace the engine. They are common and would be cheaper than
$800.00 if you did it yourself.

Regards,

Anthony.

Update

Rang Taylors and the price is $380 plus parts if I do the
assembly. Worth it for the car as it is a sweet little car.
Convertible with only 2 NZ owners since imported in 93.
Full service history, no rust and mint interior.

This is no MX5 but a nice little car never the less
