Installing a radio

Post by DBM58 » Fri Jun 10, 2005 10:38 am

Recently I suggested that when fitting a radio, instead of cutting wires, an alternative would be to source the the appropriate plastic housing from a cabling / wiring supplier. I am now of the view that there is an easier way: (easier because the cost will not be high and unless you have a suitable crimping tool fitting the terminals on to the wires is a very fiddly process)

ie. Ed's Autos
75 Peary Road
Mount Eden
Auckland

Ed supplies the harnesses already made up that will plug directly in to the two sockets in the MX5. The othe ends of the wires are bared ready to connect to the similarly bared ends of the harness supplied by the radio manufacturer.

Using Gazza'a information:

Here goes. From a wiring diagram so no guarantees :-)

Ignition - Blu/Blk
Battery - Blu/Red
Earth - Make a new one is best.
Speakers Front
L+ Red/Wht
L- Red/Grn
R+ Blu
R- Blu/Yel
Speakers headrest
L+ Red/Blu OR Blu/Orange
L- Red/Yel
R+ Blu/Or OR Red/Blu
R- Blu/Wht
Power Areial LtGrn/Yel

Or zorruno's link: http://www.mx5club.org.nz/downloads/spe ... diag_2.gif

these should be simple to join.

There is also another option, Repco sells premade cables to got
between any aftermarket stereo and any car harness, you just get the
cable for each end and clip them together. And for ~$15 each its not a
bad price.

installing a radio

Post by ianbell » Fri Jun 10, 2005 8:59 pm

In addition to David's comments re buying finished radio harnesses ( or
cables). I am installing a Panasonic Radio/CD at present (Gazza's old one) and
have purchased complete wiring looms from a car accessories shop. The cables
were Audiologic brand, made in Penrose, Auckland. To connect the Panasonic to
the MX5, I needed cable WH531 (Mazda 1990-01) and cable WHPS3 (Panasonic 16
pin), and priced at $12 each. They had plugs at both ends, which, when joined,
made 1 complete cable for the MX5/Panasonic combination. I would assume that
the WH531 combined with another cable will allow other brands of radio to be
easily fitted to the MX5.

Yup,
I got the same thing recently for my new stereo, but got one to
fit a pioneer. It worked brilliantly.
