Cleaning Rear Plastic Window

Post by R LTD » Mon Jun 06, 2005 6:26 pm

I'm seeking advice on what members have found is best for cleaning the rear
plastic window. Mine is very cloudy and difficult to see out. I don't want to
attack it with a harsh cleaning product in case I make it worse.
Appreciate advice.

Hi Tony,

Both Mothers and Meguirs do a good polish for clear plastic that both seem to
work really well. They are available from places like Repco and SuperCheap
Autos. They are worth a try before going to the expense of replacing it.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know how much a new rear window is??
Mine has an awful Sony sticker on that is half off, and is a little
cloudy.

I agree with that, normally even the foggiest window can be polished
(and stickers removed Ken!) before throwing money at a new one. As long
as there are no cuts/tears.

I think a new window is around $100-$150 installed at upholsterers like
Club Sponsor Al's Upholstory in Akl.

Ken,
IIRC a new rear window replacement from Mazda NZ cost me about $285, unfitted,
about a year ago. I still have to install it on my wife's car. (Oh the
benefits of having dual hard-tops!) The remainder of her soft top is in vgood
condition so couldn't justify the expense of a full replacement at the time

I use 'Autosol' Metal Polish - get it from a hardware shop. Worked wonders on
what looked like an over spray from armourall on the clear plastic in front of
the gauges. Its not an aggressive polish and takes a little time but it comes
up like new. Great on motorcycle visors, guitar scratch plates, you name it.
But remember to test it on a small area first - I've not had any problems, but
you never know...
