MX5 Stereo surround wanted

Post by Ken McNoe » Fri Jun 03, 2005 6:54 pm

Hi people.

Just brought my first MX5 last night, little red 1991, unfortunately the
surround that fits around the stereo and black plastic box under it is
broken, so I am looking at replacing it.

Does anyone know where I can get one?? Or does anyone have one?

Many Thanks

Ken McNoe

Ken,
I had the same problem when i got mine, they apparently
deteriorate quite badly in the sun. You can get them new from the
mazda dealer for $77 ex GST ,or i found one at a wreckers for $45 in
good condition.

Hope this helps

Mike

Thanks a lot Mike,

I brought it last night, I had a full valet and cut & polish today and
have booked it in for a full service and tune up Monday, so I think I
have spent enough money, I will have a hunt around the wreckers!!

If anyone has one floating around I would love to hear from them.

Cheers

Ken

If youre looking at the wreckers for "cubby boxes",
you need to look for late 80's early 90's ford telstar
or mazda 626. or toyota corolla ones... they are a bit
tall but a bit of skill with the hacksaw and they look
factory... the mx5 box is not a standard height to
most cars so this is about your best option.

If all else fails the Japanese seem to use some sticky back black foam like
the sort of stuff you might use to seal drafts around a door or a window.

They wrap enough around the stereo and the container bit so that no gaps
show when the face panel is put on.

I have used this method on many imports when changing the stereo and it
works quite well.

I remember one of SLYDIT's emails published in the Topdown mentioned Mazda
Australia have the stereo surround and cubby hole underneath as changed in
1996 which allows the modern stereos to fit properly.I priced them at AUD
$85 and $16.50 and they are available.I have the part number here if needed.
Has anyone tried this options as I'm keen to get some ?
