1.6 versus 1.8 (moving to crankshaft issue) and now temp sen

Post by Matt Camp » Thu May 12, 2005 11:07 pm

I'll add my "me too" to this discussion...

90 BRG V-spec straight off the boat from japan when I bought it about 3
years ago now... had a look this afternoon and it's an 8-slot pulley
with a big bolt... vin of 132xxx.

On a slightly different note - Recently my car has started overheating
if i'm stuck in traffic (hey, I live in Auckland so this is every
day)... I've had a poke around under the bonnet and realised the big fan
stuck to the radiator isn't kicking in when it gets hot...

I've found that I can fix the problem by turning on the aircon (which
starts the other fan bolted to the radiator), but sometimes if I'm not
paying attention it gets pretty warm... and it's not great on the fuel
economy either.

Anyone had this problem and know if its a cheap/easy part to replace?
I'm guessing it's probably a bung thermostat somewhere.

Hi Matt,

I havent had this problem with an mx5 but on some cars there is a simple
temporary fix.

There are 2 wiring schemes for radiator fans some are turned on by the
thermostat and some are turned off, if you are lucky and mx5's are turned
off then simply unplugging the thermostat plug will cause the fan to run all
the time when the ignition is on, this will eliminate the overheating at
little cost to your running til you are able to identify the problem and fix
it.

Its a 50/50 chance so you might as well try disconnecting it.

When I had my timing belt changed here in Japan, the
local Mazda dealer told me the cut-off date for JDM
models was September 1990.

The V-Spec model was first released in Japan in August
1990, so it would seem that very few would have the
short-nose crankshaft.

The first V-Spec model chassis no. was NA6CE-124874,
so the cut-off chassis number for JDM models must be
soon after that no.

1.6 versus 1.8 (moving to crankshaft issue) and now temp sen

Hi Matt

Your fan may not even be going at all as after a while they stick and don't
go, if this is the case new ones are f'kin' expensive, but I have found a
simple replacement, ask if you need more info.

Secondly I can't understand how the A/C would improve things as the condenser
(the hot part) is before the radiator which will pre-heat the air to the
radiator. But with the A/C on you also have the heater on full, thus the
evaporator (the cold part) which sits just before the heater coil will blow
very cold air giving you engine cooling, and being a refrigerant cooling
system, the COP (coefficient of performance) is high and will give more
cooling than heating effect. Thus overall you get some cooling.

Odds are your rad' is blocked or the fan is f****d

Just a thought

Hi Matt,
You can easily check if the thermoswitch is ok by doing the following:

Inside the engine bay, attached to a bracket just above the left hand
shock absorber mounting, is a small rectangular black plastic box. Lift
the lid and locate the "GND" and "TFA" terminals. Attach a jumper wire
between the two terminals. Turn the ignition switch on, and the fan
should run. If it does, then the most likely thing is that you need a
new thermoswitch.

This is easy to replace and is not expensive. Replacement
thermoswitches are available from places like SuperCheapAuto, Repco
etc., and cost around $20 (I think). It should only take a few minutes
to replace.

feel free to email me back if you need any other info...

Have just tried this, and the fan doesn't move :(

Does this mean I'm up for an expensive replacement?

Did you check the fuse? It's located in the fuse box on the right hand
side of the engine bay.

When you turn the Air Con on, do both fans run? If both fans run, then
the fan itself is obviously ok. If only one fan runs, then the problem
may lie with the fan relay.

The relay is located in the fusebox on the right hand side of the
engine bay.

Remove the relay and check for continuity between contacts A and C,
there should be no continuity.

Check for continuity between contacts B and D, there should be
continuity here.

Next, apply 12vdc across contacts D and B, you should hear a click when
voltage is applied. If there is no click the relay needs replacing.

If there is a click, check for continuity between contacts A and C,
this time there should be continuity (as long as you still have voltage
applied across D and B), if not replace the relay.

If the relay is ok, then you should check the wiring between the relay
receptacle and the electrical connector at the fan.

If the wiring is all ok, and the relay is ok, and the fuse is ok you
may be looking at a new fan... but before you go out and buy one, try
turning it by hand. Does it turn easily? If it doesn't, maybe it's just
needs taking apart and cleaning up. If it does turn easily maybe the
wiring between the electrical connector and the fan motor is the
problem...

Good luck!

The fan may not be all of your trouble - call me gloomy if you like. Does
the car get hot running at open road speeds? Mine started as a heat up in
traffic and progressively got worse. Turning on the AC helped as both fans
ran but it turned out that the radiator was clogged. Cost me $80 to get
fixed. Took the radiator to a company in Onehunga who did a great job. All
good now. I think in 15 years (the age of my car) the radiator gets sludged
up and can no longer do it's job.

Ross at MX5 mart will have a fan for a good price if that turns out to be
all the problem is.

Hi Ted

I wrote this email to the list about a year back, if you go ahead and have any
problems email me and I'll send you my number to talk you through it. Anyway
here's the email...

My radiator fan died recently and I was horrified at the price of a new one
through Mazda at over $600 for just the motor. I tried stripping the fan motor
with little success.

My next option was $180 for a second hand fan that could crap out in a couple
of months.I looked round for after market options and the best I could find
was at Appco Auto Parts. A new 12" electric fan complete with shroud (part
number ACK-1002) for $121.

A simple mod'
I removed the original fan and shroud (the hardest part of the job), then cut
away the four arms from the shroud that hold the fan in place. Next I cut off
the four mounting brackets off the outside of the new fan (so it's round).
This then fits perfectly inside the old fan shroud, I just had to glue it in
place with epoxy or I could have used bolts but they would have been ugly.
Just make sure you sit the fan as far forward (towards radiator) into the
shroud or it will rub on one of the air conditioning pipes.

It's not original parts (some will no doubt frown) but it's very tidy and
cheaper than even an old second hand one, and it's very tidy.

Cheers
