How high is standard height???

Hi

How high does a standard MX5 sit? Could someone with a standard MX5 do me a
favour and measure from the centre of the wheel up to the edge of the guard.
Not from the ground up to the guard as I have 16" wheels.

All the aftermarket springs talk about lowering by XXXmm but I have no idea
what a normal height is as my car already sat low and now I have Koni's.

I seem to recall reading that 1.8s sit a bit higher than 1.6s, mines a 1.8

My 1990 1.6 is 345 front & 355 rear. It is a red one, but BRG ones may be
lower due to embarrassment.

Seems timely to wade into the colour debate and I could not resist this...
I would have thought that red was more the colour of embarrassment than green!
Maybe we should be measuring the height from ground to either long or short
nosed crank/pulleys.
Thanks Euen for the suggestion re going to Mazda man for further
investigation on VIN nos...

Cheers for that, as can be seen already there seem to be variances (335/340,
345/355) although not much. The strange thing is, I've seen quite a few MX's
that sit quite high, I assumed this was the standard. Mine is a 1600cc 89 by
the way. At the mo' mine is 330 front and 340 back. Regardless it seems to be
about the norm given a huge sample of 3. Thus for me to lower the car by 40mm
would put the wheels inside the guards, which would be great if I had the
correct wheel offsets.

Here's a fourth sample, plus some specs.

According to my Norm Garrett performance handbook, it depends what camber
you're running as to what the height is. There's a table that I'm not going
to re-type (too damn slow for that) - but assuming that you're running
something close to what Norm recommends, you get the following ...

Front
Camber -0deg 20min +/- 30min, caster 5deg 16min +/- 45min gives a stock
height from wheel centre to fender brim of 328-337mm (the fender brim is the
highest point on the inside of the wheel arch as I read it)

Rear
Camber -1deg 8min +/- 30 min gives a stock height from wheel centre to
fender brim of 345-355mm

The table gives a range of standard heights depending on camber ranging well
away from the figures above. (All this is for an NA BTW).

I'm running 195/50 R15s, front camber -0deg 10 min, rear camber -1deg with
the correct 45mm offset. I have a front height of 307mm & a rear height of
330mm (measured as above) - no thanks to me, it's how it was when I bought
the car. This seems to work well - plenty of clearance around the wheel
arch & looks good. I wouldn't go any lower unless you're racing - for
regular road use, speed humps etc that's close enough to the ground I
reckon.

and I don't want to get some NB ones and end up too high. Anyone bought any

New SR special shocks , I am new to this game ..what do you think of these.

Hi Bert,

Im running 91 in my 89 1600 with mega advance on the timing cause it seemed a
bit thirsty and its running fine.

compression engines that needed more octane. In any case there's a
knock sensor which will wind things back if necessary.

Mine have them, but they were already there when bought sorry. Also
note that the front springs and back springs swapped makes for an
interesting look. I've seen it on a couple of cars.
