Magnesium

Post by EricW » Mon May 09, 2005 7:51 pm

Just to correct the science, pure magnesium is a white metallic powder,
which oxidises extremely rapidly and readily, it will burn spontaneously in
air and is normally stored in crystal form under water. It, along with
aluminium derivatives is the flammable component of most emergency flares.

However, alloyed with other metals, particularly aluminium, nickel and
titanium, it makes very light and immensely strong, non-flammable metals,
which are used for jet engine turbines, amongst other "hot" applications.
Nickel/Magnesium is sometimes the ablative component in aircraft brakes

So don't worry, your wheels are highly unlikely to burst into flame. On the
other hand, although low concentrations of magnesium are essential to human
health (and make a great cure for indigestion) getting down and licking them
is also not recommended!

Have a great night

Eric
