Spoken to the Manfield office. Sorry folks but no open top cars permitted. This
includes anything with a soft top regardless of hoops etc.
Hard tops should have been ok according to their permit from MSNZ, , but if
the scrutineer said no last year, then don't count on it being ok this year. I
wouldn't drive from out of town to take part.

I am told the new format open day is run under clubsport regs, so the only
opentop car that can run has to conform to schedule A. So has to have a nz
motor sport approved roll bar or cage, or have an approved vintage / classic
approved exemption.
The MX5 hard top would not get approval. So if they are running under
clubsport regs, then style bars would not meet the specs.
The cars that run last weekend all meet schedule A so could run on the open
day as well, however I would not expect a standard mx5 could run in the new
open days.

Included below is a copy of an email on this topic. Last time it came up.
It is a bit of a bugger that we can not run without rollover
protection like we do on the road. Wind in your hair and all
that...or as in my case, aerodynamically diverted over the crests and
waves of my bald patch. Creating a tad more downforce to keep me in my seat.
The Training day was an opportunity to do just that. I loved it
Having raced the odd time I dont think I would like to without having
something taller than me for the road to bounce off, should Roslyn
(car) and I become inverted.
Cheers
Colin
Open Cars, and permitted events.
As per our conversation earlier today, the only events that an Open
Car (which means any car not having a permanent solid structure from
the windscreen running over the occupants to the rear of the vehicle -
so clipping on a hard top isn't going to help you) may compete in
without HOMOLOGATED Roll Protection (either half, or full cage) are:
Motorkhana's
Autocross's
Standing 400m sprints (but not flying 400m)
Also, it is worth noting that an organiser even for the above three
types of event may in fact in their regs specifically state that all
open cars must have roll protection, which would exclude cars without
homologated roll protection. If a venue was deemed too dangerous by
the organisers, they may choose to exclude non-caged open cars.
I use the word Homologated a lot, because if a roll protection
structure does not have MotorSport NZ Homologation, then it may not be
used. eg: the double chrome heated towel rails that a lot of MX5's
have screwed onto the rear parcel shelf.
