Sway bar sizes...

Post by poison » Mon Apr 04, 2005 8:25 pm

Hi

Could someone with a vernier and an NA 1800 please do me a favour and
volunteer to crawl under their lovely MX and measure the thickness of the sway
bars (front and rear) please. Or tell me if you happen to already know...

On my 1600 the rear is 12.5mm (according to the article below should be 12mm
but maybe I'm not squeezing hard enough) and the front 19.5mm (again should be
19.0mm, maybe time for new verniers), in fact they are not exactly round and
vary from 19.5 to 20mm and that's on a straight section trying to avoid
deformation near the bends.

I have an article about what size bars should be set up together but it's
confusing about the factory 'stock' sizes as many people tell me the 1800 has
bigger bars, but this article seems to say the opposite. Also it's American
and our cars are usually X-Japan imports... If you are keen for a nosey

Another possibly more interesting article on combinations and their effects is
at http://www.miata.net/garage/soloii.html

Cheers

Hi Gazza

My suspension is all over the garage floor so I didn't have to crawl under
the car. It is out of a 96 1800 ex Japan. Front is 19.2 and the rear 11.4,
both measured on the straight.

If you wanted to have a look, I am in Birkenhead. Drop me a note off line
or call me on 021409115.

Cheers Euen

That's great, and thanks for the offer. I'd be keen just to pop over and have
a look at it apart as I'm about to do my shocks. I'll give you a call tomorrow
and se how your set, you are just round the corner.

Well that is interesting as it seems that the 1800 and 1600 rear bars are the
same but the front is smaller on the 1800cc. I would assume this is to reduce
the possibility of understeer, I've had my car understeer twice on wet round
abouts at low speeds, kind of weird. In some reviews of thicker sway bars
people have mentioned the tendency for the cars to slide easier in the wet.
There's always a trade off. Looks like Mazda got the factory set up pretty
good really.
