A nice lady knocked on my door this morning and told me that my car had
been broken into. The thieves slashed the top and took the stereo (plus
the face plate which was so cunningly hidden in the glove compartment).

It wasn't as bad as it could have been - the car was booked in to get a
new top on Wednesday and now it seems like the insurance might pay for
it. And I just emailed Ross to get a new centre-console surround.

I knew this might happen when I moved house and started parking the car
on the street. It took about three months. Time to reconsider the whole
car thing - I may not have an MX5 for much longer...

Anyone want a 1990 Silver MX5 which has done about 130k and has a brand
new soft-top? I'll post more details if I definitely decide to sell.

No need to give up the joys of your MX5... just get a hard top for when
you have to park in dodgy places...
I run with top down whenever I possibly can (I've even been known to
drive top down in showers with my passenger holding an open umbrella!)
But I keep a hard top for when I'm going to park at night in the city
or in at the cinema... in fact anywhere I'm insecure about the
opportunistic rabble. (Much nicer not having to worry about a slasher
which trying to enjoy a good movie!)
One of the best investments I've made for my MX!

Hello from UK... :-)
No need to give up the joys of your MX5... just get a hard top for when
you have to park in dodgy places...
In Uk, Hardtops are regularly stolen - they're very easy to take off to the
extent that one of our commercial suppliers has devised a lock that fits
over the latch. I would be wary of relying on the hardtop for security.

Unfortunately the "dodgy place" seems to be the street outside my house.

Still considering whether to sell it or buy a hardtop. One of the
reasons I like convertibles is the impromptu nature of putting the top
down and a hard top would remove that.

MX5 ownership might have to wait until I have a place with a garage.

Thomas.

Thanks for shattering my illusion of hard top security!

Wait a mo... has anyone ever heard of a hard top being stolen off an
MX5 in New Zealand?

Maybe this is just a UK hard top cult...

Eric, I really really don't want to contemplate the the implication
inherent in your comment... that we may have that kind of lurker here!
Too, too much!

<g> Sorry bout that! If it's a UK cult it's bound to make it to NZ soon
enough. Better to be forewarned? :-)

Some people suggest leaving the glovebox and centre console empty and open
when the car is left out - shows the lowlifes that there's nothing in there.
Doesn't help with the stereo. but it might help if you take the face plate
with you... :-) Personally I think the alarm should have a dynamite
option...

Anyway, why would anyone want to wear a hardtop - I bought a convertable and
it stays converted all year round - even had snow in it on the odd
occasion...

I never married because there was no need. I have three pets at
home which answer the same purpose as a husband. I have a dog
which growls every morning, a parrot which swears all afternoon
and a cat that comes home late at night. -Marie Corelli

Absolutely no slur intended on any of the fine people who contribute to the
list, but someone will undoubtedly think of it sooner or later. It's a bit
like landing your aeroplane with the wheels up, it's either happened or it
is going to!
