Hi everyone.
I've been a regular reader of this forum for many years but as yet not really had any problem with the mx5,until this week-end, my car is a 1990 model with aprox 130,000 kms has started to make a loud clunk at the rear end when doing a U turn from a stand still and both rear wheels are making small shudder's when pulling away in a straight line.
I suspect the diff, any advise would be great & alternative diff type which would fit.
Many thanks.

diff problems
When doing a U turn, press the accelerator firmly to the
ground and the clunk will not be heard over the squeeling of
the tyres... all good

diff problems
Yeah, I was going to make the same suggestion, Diffs tend to make continuous
noise, a clunk or shudder tends to suggest something is coming loose,
particularly under high torque conditions
Stick it up on a couple of axle stands and tighten things up, but also have
a look for any thing that might have broken, or bushes that are flogged out.
Regards

I have an 89 mx5 but have fitted it with a more powerfull motor and after
giving it a good rev off at the lights one day the carrier arm holding the
actual diff just snaped off problem solved by welding it up.

Dave have you looked at something other than the diff? Another idea could be
the handbrake. If this is sticking and holding on it will make a similar
noise when it lets go.
