Hey Ken, I tend to agree it's more of a girls car unless you change the sound
with a big bore and maybe put some bigger wheels on it and an H & K airfilter
with pod. I don't know what else to say.
Imp a 45 yr old lady who loves her cars and the MX5 is just a toy car to me. I
like to drive it for a change ( My S Holden is my favorite) and in the summer
the MX is fun. But I would think a blokes car is more like a Holden or a Ford.
Perhaps you should try a Convertible Mustang to avoid anymore sarcasm or just
be thick skinned and say no! Im going to keep my sweet little baby and stuff
what they say.
Cheers! Chrissy

The only thing I worry about being a women is the safety factor of these older
ones. No airbags no roof, no side bars etc. I've had 3 mx5's and never had a
problem mechanically with them. The reliability and simplicity of the engine
is the thing that attracts me not to mention the look.

Hrrumph!! We real men don't need such things as airbags! Or sidebars!
If we're ever in trouble we just accelerate out of it.
(Come to think of it, we real men are far too good at driving to ever
be in trouble... and we're humble with it.)

HA! that means Im not married to a real man as he drives a 1992 Mazda 323
Automatic and it couldn't get out of any situation as it's the slowest car
I've ever driven apart from my first car 1960 Humber 80 he! he doesn't give a
stuff when people see his car and call it a Nana's car. The great thing about
it is he saves heaps of money.

I'm cushioned enough as it is. Don't need no steenkin airbag ;-)

Of course, the simple fact that we are proud to be seen in public, driving our
neat little MX5s, is surely demonstration enough of our confidence in our
masculinity.

Who needs some testosterone charged "yank tank" to convince themselves of
their maleness, that's a sure sign of deficiency in the "Willy" department if
you ask me!

Yes, sadly I think my middle aged body is cushioned sufficiently to
preclude the use of air bags too. I'd be most interested to find out
the average age of MX5 drivers... I see an awful lot of over thirty
fives driving them... I suspect we all used to dream of owning an MGB
or midget when we were lil'uns and now that the MX is out, its
perfect... Japanese reliability, American design, but based on all
the good bits of the British original... without oil leaks, pathetic
power, etc.

How can you possibly save heaps of money when you're married? Surely the two
states are mutually exclusive?

Ha !

I've had 2 MGB GTs and now 2 MX5's. I sure wouldn't go back to owning an MG
20 odd years in improved technology makea a helluva difference!!

Funny that... I bought the little red number at 41, going through a
terrible break of a 21 year marriage... yes... probably as a
STATEMENT etc etc, but I still have it 5 years later, AND I found a
beautiful redhead (of similar vintage to myself... not a young sports
model). We have 2 cars... the 2 seater and a ##$$%%^^* great Toyota
Granvia van to cart the 4 kids in...
such is life.

Actually, the way I got my MX5 was by pointing out to my wife that when most
men have a mid-life crisis they get divorced and buy a sports car, but I was
willing to skip the divorce bit...

No, No, No, If you were ever in the Army, you would know, "Beauty's no good
when your rations are cold"! The idea is that you find yourself a nice little
blonde thing to start with, train her up, and then, as the need arises, you
buy HER the little red number to keep her young.

My "little blonde thing" is now a superannuitant, but she still gets looks as
she rolls by "top down" (the car's, not her's) in her "little red number" and
if she went on "Ten Years Younger in 10 Days" I could get arrested for child
abuse at the end of the show!

Gents, if you want affirmation of your masculinity, buy your wife the MX5, and
she will affirm it for you! It's the best recipe for a happy marriage that I
know!

I think that's great you kept your wife and got the sports car that you
wanted. It certainly was cheaper that way as a Divorce would have cost big
dollars.

My wife would just say "affirm it yourself", and drive off. But then she is
from Scotland. (Are you allowed to say 'affirm it yourself' on the PC ?

Good grief Chrissy - I've just read all your messages posted this afternoon -
blasphemy! What's an airbag got to do with safety? It's simply ballast in the
passenger seat that doesn't keep quiet. Fried On Race Days and Holde'ns
together with rust are poles apart from the quintessential thinking man's car
- the Mazda MX5. A toy? Just a girl's car? No way. It's a statement by
it's driver, tangibly crafted in steel, rubber and glass: "I think therefore I
am driving". Driving, that is, one of the finest combinations of sports
motoring machinery available per the dollar.

Cheers & Take Care
Mark

No harm in trading the OLD AIR BAG for a newer model with less miles...
although a blonde... I don't think so...
And you don't have to wait till 40 for a trade-up.. it reminds me of that good
old analogy... why buy a book when you can get one from the library and take
it back when you've finished with it...

And sorry Eric I have to admit my MX is a fill in, until I get a house that
will fit a nice Yank Tank (68 Firebird convertible). Although the MX has
proven to be a lot of fun...

Old yank tanks are lots of fun, but the way vehicles handle has imrpoved
immensely since the sixties and seventies. Once I have sailed my old yank for
a day, heaved the steeering over like a tiller, slid across the flat vinyl
bench seat a few times, hung onto the drivers door to prevent roll together,
leaned into corners like a yacht captain, listened to the squeel of protesting
tyres ( just cornering normally), I find the delight of an mx5 that goes where
you point it quite refreshing...
