Has any one put larger 1800cc mx5 rotors on a 1600??and if so how much better
were they?

Mike..
For all but race use, slotted rather than driled is the best. Factory discs
which come drilled ala Porsche etc is definetly not an a'aftermarket'
process.Drilling discs is a 'dark art'. A drilled, stressed and shattered
rotor is a scary thought.
I would have thought that the standard MX5 braking system, in good condition
with fresh Dot 4 fluid plus perhaps a performance pad, given the cars weight,
will brake as well as you would want on the road. Check condition of caliper
slider pins...
I understand the 1800 brake upgrade is a worthwhile 'competition' step up, esp
if a targa or long distance event is being contemplated.
I am preparing my car for 'club racing' - typically 4 lap races, so fluid and
a pad change is what is planned, based on the best advice to date.
Cheers, Ian

<http://www.bigllama.com/miata/brake/bigbrake.htm>
It's a very common mod here in the UK and I understand does improve
braking on track days, but probably not necessary for normal road
use. I don't have one of those prototype models, so can't comment
first hand...

1600 rotors
I have both Mike. I replaced my 1600 rotors with some 1800 sized,
slotted & cross drilled DBA rotors. Also added the 1800 sized calliper
mounts & TRUST Greddy pads to go with it. The setup still uses the 1600
callipers and Ive still got the standard rears (with Mazda speed pads).
I actually bought the set-up for my previous mx5, but sold it & bought a
supercharged mx5 before I could get around to fitting it. Funny thing
was that my driving style changed quite a bit with a faster car. I no
longer needed to leave my braking late to keep the speed up so I was
nowhere near as hard on them. Also my new car was initially very
unstable under braking, which Im guessing was due to warped rotors or
something, because when the new gear was put on the difference was like
night & day. Yes they are a great set-up, but its hard to gauge exactly
how much better. They do look very impressive though, and being Mazda
parts (or specific aftermarket replacements) I dont have any hassles
getting it certed. The calliper mounts cost about $350 new from Mazda,
and the pads were about $150 (1/2 price deal at the time) and the rotors
cost something horrendous. I cant remember exactly, but the total for
everything was something like $1200-1300. Doesnt really seem like value
for money looking back, but those were the days when I had no kids, no
wife, and disposable income Ahhh!!! Those were the days.
